Living in Yocum Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Yocum doubles use a split-size pattern: the door-side bed is a 36-inch by 75-inch regular twin and the window-side bed is a 36-inch by 80-inch long twin, both about 7.5 inches thick. Pipe chase rooms -- numbers ending in 05, 10, 17 and 28, found on every floor except the first -- were modified to house an air-flow chase and come out ahead: long twin beds on both sides, a wall-mounted flat-screen TV, lofts, movable bureaus and desks, and clearance adjustable every three inches from 3 up to 71 inches instead of the standard 24-to-59-inch range. ADA rooms also use long twin on both sides. Furniture is otherwise standard-issue: bed, desk, and dresser per resident. Cooking equipment isn't kept in the room but can be checked out from the front desk. Bathrooms are community style, shared by others on the floor.

Opened in 1963 and named for Judge Henry S. Yocum of El Dorado, who served on the Board of Trustees, Yocum is a ten-story coed tower housing 530 students -- UArk's tallest traditional hall -- with a large ground-floor activity room and a first-floor TV lounge that double as informal gathering spots. Housing lists its student population as 'All students' rather than freshman-only, so incoming students share the building with upperclassmen, and it hosts a Living/Learning Community. It sits directly across the street from the Walton College of Business and Kimpel Hall, about five minutes' walk from both the 1021 Food Hall and the Arkansas Union. Residents get laundry in the building, high-speed ResNet, mental health services, a front-desk kitchen, and an elevator. Visiting hours are 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 24 hours Friday and Saturday. The building's height means elevator waits can run longer at peak times than in UArk's smaller halls.

Move-in day

Yocum is one of three halls (with Hotz and Humphreys) whose general move-in opens on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, which carries a $35 early arrival charge; the remaining days, Aug. 6-8, are open to all communities, and move-in continues Aug. 10-14. Ten floors make this one of the more elevator-dependent move-ins on campus -- expect longer waits than at low-rise halls like Reid, especially on upper floors during peak traffic. All residents check in first at Baum-Walker Stadium at their scheduled time for keys, then drive to the building, where families get 30 minutes to unload at the lot followed by no time limit for carrying items up. If you're assigned a high floor, consider an earlier arrival slot when Housing Portal scheduling opens June 8-18, and pack essentials separately so you're not waiting on the elevator for everything at once.
