What to bring to Saint Louis Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every SLUfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ $4,500 non-compliance fee applies if a residency-required student fails to complete a housing contract or an approved exemption before the contract period begins; 2026 exemption window is Feb. 2 - June 1 for first-years, contract priority deadline May 1, 2026.

Common questions about Saint Louis University dorms

How long do SLU students have to live on campus?

SLU requires on-campus housing for the first four semesters (two years) of enrollment. Exemptions exist for students living with a parent or guardian within 25 miles, students 21 or older, married students, students with dependent children, students with two or more years of active military service, and transfers entering with 48+ credits. Missing the deadline to submit a contract or an approved exemption triggers a $4,500 non-compliance fee.

Can I loft my bed in an SLU residence hall?

Not through the university — SLU's beds are fixed-height platform frames and are never described as loft or height-adjustable on any hall's page. If you want a raised or lofted bed, the only option is a paid rental through the third-party service Bedloft.com.

Are SLU dorms air conditioned?

It depends on the building. Reinert Hall and Fusz Hall both explicitly list central air conditioning on their own hall pages. Grand Hall and Spring Hall include air conditioning as part of SLU's general first-year-housing amenities, though their individual hall pages don't restate it. The Griesedieck Complex (Griesedieck, Clemens and Walsh halls) uses window air conditioning units instead of central air. Personal AC units are prohibited campus-wide regardless of which hall you're in.

When does new-student move-in happen for fall 2026?

Aug. 14, 2026, per SLU's Move-In FAQ page, with assigned time blocks between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (Returning-student move-in is Aug. 15-16.) SLU's separate general Housing Calendar page still shows a placeholder message for the 2026-27 academic year — the Move-In FAQ page is the more specific and current source.

What items are banned in SLU residence halls?

SLU's Housing and Residence Life policy bans personal air conditioners (window or portable), weapons and ammunition, electric/motorized scooters and hoverboards, halogen/lava/sun lamps and incandescent bulbs, hookahs, candles/incense and other open-flame devices, air fryers/pressure cookers and other open-heat appliances, non-surge-protected extension cords, wireless routers, and LED light strips, plus devices that promote irresponsible drinking (beer bongs, funnels, kegs). Only fish or hermit crabs in a 10-gallon-or-smaller container are allowed as pets — an unauthorized pet carries a $500 cleaning fee plus an additional fine.
