What to bring to University of Oklahomadorms — and what’s already there

Every OUfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Students who fail to complete a housing contract or obtain an approved exemption from the first-year residency requirement incur a $3,000 financial fine.

⚠ OU does not itemize air conditioning on its individual hall pages, so cooling is listed here as partial rather than confirmed per hall — personal air conditioners are prohibited campus-wide as non-approved appliances, so if your student wants specifics for their building, ask Housing & Food Services (housinginfo@ou.edu) rather than buying a portable unit.

⚠ Lithium-ion e-transportation devices (e-bikes, e-scooters, hoverboards, electric skateboards) cannot be charged or stored inside any residence hall or university building — this is a fire-code rule, not a suggestion.

⚠ One refrigerator and one microwave are allowed per unit, each no more than 4 cubic feet; microwaves must draw 500-750 watts and no more than three amps per hour, and minifridges 150-350 watts.

Common questions about University of Oklahoma dorms

What size bed do OU dorm rooms have?

It varies by hall and even by floor plan. David L. Boren Hall publishes a 36"x75" polyfoam mattress that takes XL twin sheets, and McCasland Hall and South Hall use Twin XL throughout. Headington Hall is full-size in every unit. Cross Village is full-size in every layout except the 2-bedroom/4-person suite, which is the only Twin XL in the building. Couch Center is Twin XL at 36"x82". Confirm your assigned floor plan — not just your hall — before buying sheets.

Are freshmen required to live on campus at OU?

Yes. Students under 21 who earned fewer than 24 credit hours between high school graduation and the first day of classes must live in University housing — first fall and spring semester for fall/summer admits, first spring semester only for spring admits. Exemptions cover students who are married or have children, students who already lived in University residence halls for two semesters, students from Cleveland or McClain counties still living with a parent or guardian there, and students with a verifiable financial, medical, or exceptional need. Skipping the contract without an approved exemption carries a $3,000 fine.

Can I bring a refrigerator and microwave?

Check your room assignment first — Headington Hall, Cross Village and McCasland Hall include appliances in the unit (Headington provides a microwave and apartment-size fridge; Cross Village kitchenettes include a sink, full-sized refrigerator and microwave), so a second one is redundant. Where you do need to bring your own, OU allows one refrigerator and one microwave per unit, each 4 cubic feet or less, with microwaves at 500-750 watts (max three amps per hour) and minifridges at 150-350 watts.

Can I loft or bunk my bed at OU?

It depends on the hall, and only Couch Center says so in writing: its page states that "in addition to the traditional setting, beds can be bunked or lofted." Cross Village, McCasland Hall and South Hall describe their furniture as movable but publish no loft or bunk option; Boren and Headington say nothing either way. Campus-wide, self-constructed lofts, bed risers and other unapproved lofting materials are prohibited, so confirm with Residence Life before buying anything.

When does OU move-in happen for fall 2026?

General move-in is Monday, August 17 through Tuesday, August 18, 2026 for all residents. Early move-in runs Thursday, August 6 through Friday, August 7 for Panhellenic and The Pride of Oklahoma and other approved pre-semester groups, and carries a $200 early move-in fee billed to the student's bursar account.
