What to bring to University of New Mexicodorms — and what’s already there

Every UNMfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Alcohol is prohibited in all Main Campus residence halls regardless of resident age; the only exception is Lobo Rainforest, where residents 21 and older may possess it in their own unit.

⚠ UNM residence halls are smoke-free: tobacco smoking is allowed only in three designated outdoor spots (between Coronado and RVA, the west side of DeVargas Hall, and one at Lobo Rainforest), while cannabis and electronic or simulated smoking materials are banned outright.

⚠ Lofting beds, free-standing elevated beds, extra beds, and water beds are all prohibited in UNM rooms, so do not buy a loft kit before move-in.

⚠ Personal air conditioners are not allowed in student rooms, and UNM switches the halls to heat-only mode once cooler weather arrives, so a fan is the only cooling you control.

⚠ Only one refrigerator or MicroFridge unit is permitted per bed space to prevent electrical overload, so coordinate with your roommate first.

⚠ Unauthorized cooking or heating appliances (toasters, toaster ovens, anything with a visible heating element) carry a $50 fine per occasion; microwaves are capped at 800 watts.

Common questions about University of New Mexico dorms

What size bed is in a UNM dorm room?

Twin XL. UNM's move-in packing list specifies a "Bed with mattress (twin XL in traditional doubles and singles. Laguna DeVargas' Singles, Full Size)," covering Coronado, Hokona, Alvarado and Santa Clara. UNM does not publish the mattress dimensions in inches, so buy sheets labeled extra-long twin rather than sizing to a number.

Can I loft or bunk my bed at UNM?

No. UNM's 2026-27 Residence Hall Handbook states that "water beds, extra beds, free standing elevated beds, or lofting beds and other construction, including attaching shelves to walls, are not permitted in your room." UNM does not publish an under-bed clearance measurement either, so measure on move-in day before buying tall storage bins.

Are UNM residence halls air conditioned?

Partly. UNM Housing's own notice about switching the halls over for winter describes "converting all residence halls to heat and deactivating the air conditioning," which confirms a central HVAC system that can cool — but the same notice says that once converted, "cool air will not come through the HVAC system." No individual hall page itemizes AC, and personal air conditioners are banned in student rooms, so bring a fan and confirm current conditions with Residence Life at 505-277-2606.

Is a meal plan required for freshmen at UNM?

Yes. UNM Housing states plainly that "the University of New Mexico requires that first year residents/freshmen purchase a meal plan." Meal plans are managed by the LoboCard Office at 505-277-9970, separately from the housing contract.

Can freshmen bring a mini-fridge or microwave to UNM?

Triples are initially billed at the double rate and credited later if the room is actually filled to triple capacity.

When does Fall 2026 move-in start at UNM?

Hokona and Coronado open August 13, 2026, followed by Santa Clara, Alvarado and Laguna DeVargas on August 14 and the apartments on August 15. Each day has three arrival blocks — 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 12:30-3:00 p.m., and 3:00-5:00 p.m. — selected on the housing dashboard. Approved Advance Arrival is August 8 for students in qualifying programs and carries a $175 fee; that application opens June 8, 2026 and closes July 10, 2026.
