What to bring to University of Utahdorms — and what’s already there

Every the Ufreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Anything showing evidence of being burned is a violation, but the U does allow wickless candles and candles with no burnt wick; if your religious or spiritual tradition requires burning candles or incense, you must arrange it with your Resident Director or the HDP office first.

⚠ Hoverboards, e-scooters, and other lithium-battery rides must be UL 2272 or UL 2849 listed to be stored or charged indoors, and must be charged in your own bedroom.

⚠ A dining plan is required in the first-year living areas, billed on top of the room rate.

⚠ The first-year housing guarantee only holds if you apply by the May 4, 2026 Housing Guarantee Deadline (and you must have paid your enrollment deposit before you can apply). Offers represent a guaranteed bed — room type is not guaranteed.

⚠ Firearms are not banned: the U says residents may keep a firearm in their room for personal protection without a concealed-carry permit, and a locked safe is encouraged rather than required. If you don't want to room with a firearm, Housing will accommodate a room change.

Common questions about University of Utah dorms

What size are the beds at University of Utah dorms?

Twin XL in the first-year halls. The U's Fall Move-In page says "most of the beds at the U can be lofted" — if yours isn't self-loftable you submit a maintenance request or ask your front desk for a lofting kit (first-come, first-served). Triple and Triple Private Bathroom rooms come already lofted at no charge. Three room types use a Full bed instead and cannot be lofted: Lassonde Studios pods, Impact & Prosperity Epicenter end-caps, and Trailhead's 4-Person Single Suites.

Is on-campus housing required for freshmen?

No. The University of Utah does not require first-year students to live on campus. It does guarantee a bed to first-years who complete a housing application by the May 4, 2026 Housing Guarantee Deadline; an enrollment deposit must be paid before you can apply. The offer guarantees a bed, not a specific room type.

Can I bring a mini-fridge and microwave?

Mini-fridges are on the official recommended packing list as a bring-your-own item. Trailhead is the exception — most of its rooms come with a microwave/mini-fridge combo built in, and the 4-person single suites get a full-size refrigerator instead. In-room microwave policy isn't spelled out on the other building pages (Sage Point has kitchenettes with sinks and microwaves on each floor), so confirm with Housing & Dining Programs at 801-587-2002 before you buy one.

What's banned in University of Utah residence halls?

Anything with an open heating element or immersion coil (hot plates, toasters, toaster ovens, George Foreman-type indoor grills), halogen lamps, waterbeds, flammable liquids, and any candle or incense showing evidence of being burned — wickless candles are allowed. Weapons including bows, crossbows, swords, throwing stars and knives with blades over 5 inches are banned, though firearms kept in-room for personal protection are not. Hoverboards and e-scooters must be UL 2272 or UL 2849 listed, per the Resident Policies & Responsibilities page.

When does fall 2026 move-in start?

General move-in is August 18-21, 2026, with time slots assigned by residence hall and floor. A pre-approved early-arrival window runs August 14-17 for students registered with a university-sponsored activity — $250 one-time fee, or $150 for sorority recruitment participants.
