Living in Santa Clara Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

UNM describes Santa Clara as "very similar to Alvarado hall, offering double and triple accommodations" — its page lists no single rooms, so plan on sharing. Every room comes with built-in shelving and bureau drawers plus the standard Twin XL bed, desk, and chair, and residents use community bathrooms shared by floor. Each floor has its own full kitchen and study lounge for cooking and group study outside the room. At 170 residents at capacity, Santa Clara is one of UNM's smallest traditional halls, which tends to make for a tighter-knit community than a building like Coronado at 432.

Day to day

Santa Clara is UNM's pet-permitted residence hall — Housing calls it a unique living environment for residents and their "approved furry, scaly, or otherwise amphibian friend" — but approval is a separate application with its own agreement and fees, not something you sort out at the door. Students with an approved ESA or certified service animal may live in any UNM building and can also choose a pet-permitted community. The hall sits next to La Posada Dining Hall and the SRC Commons, keeping food and student services close. A basement recreation area is open 24/7, and Community Association meetings run Tuesday nights at 8:30 with locations posted throughout the building. Santa Clara is served by the Hokona Area Desk.

Move-in day

Santa Clara opens for Fall 2026 move-in on August 14, alongside Alvarado and Laguna DeVargas and one day after Coronado and Hokona. Arrival blocks run 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 12:30-3:00 p.m., and 3:00-5:00 p.m., selected on the housing dashboard; UNM does not publish a date when slot selection opens, so watch your UNM email. Residents bringing an approved pet should finish the pet application, agreement, and fees well before move-in day, since that approval is entirely separate from the housing contract and an unapproved animal has to leave within 24 hours. Students in qualifying programs can apply for Approved Advance Arrival on August 8 for a $175 fee; that application opens June 8, 2026 and closes July 10, 2026.
