Living in Fleming Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Fleming Hall rooms run about 10 feet 6 inches wide by 14 feet 6 inches long, smaller than the newer high-rise halls, with a 6-foot closet split into two 3-foot sections, a 40-by-24-inch desk with drawers, a chair, and a dresser. The window is 4 feet wide by 6 feet tall, set 10 feet off the floor. Carpet flooring rather than tile is a distinguishing feature of this historic building, which also includes a microwave and mini-fridge. Beds are ECU's standard bunkable Twin XL (80-inch) frames, adjustable up to 24 inches, with UL-listed bed lifts adding another 3-8 inches. Community bathrooms serve each floor. ECU describes Fleming's Spanish-mission architecture as nearly identical to the university's original halls, Jarvis and Wilson.

Day to day

Fleming sits in the Central neighborhood, ECU's most walkable base for classes — it is a short walk from Joyner Library and many classroom buildings. It houses roughly 170 students, making it one of the smaller, more tight-knit halls on campus. Laundry facilities and lounges support day-to-day life, and the historic brick-and-tile architecture gives Fleming a different feel from West End's high-rises or College Hill's larger halls.

Move-in day

Fleming Hall residents move in during ECU's primary window, Wednesday through Friday, August 12-14, 2026, with the specific day and time frame assigned by hall and floor. Check-in begins at Minges Coliseum's Hall of Fame for key pickup and a vehicle pass, after which residents proceed to the hall. Students may also use the optional early drop-off period, July 30-August 1, and return Friday, August 14 after 4 p.m. or any time August 15-16. After-hours check-in for central halls runs 6-10 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the West End Neighborhood Service Office.
