Living in Miles Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
A typical Miles Hall room is 14'3" by 11'6", traditional-style and shared by two roommates, furnished with twin beds, twin XL mattresses, desks, chairs, dressers, clothing storage, a sink, and a mirror. The beds are loftable using the room's existing furniture — no loft kit is issued, and outside lofts and bed risers are prohibited. There is no in-suite bathroom, so the room is meant mainly for sleeping, studying, and storage rather than lounging. With no air conditioning in the building, a fan is worth adding to the packing list, and over-the-door organizers and under-bed bins help once the beds are raised.
Day to day
Miles is an all-male hall on President's Quad, on the eastern residential side of campus, with a community bathroom on each floor rather than an in-suite bathroom — though rooms do have their own sink and mirror. Amenities include common areas, a community kitchen, study lounges, heating, and wireless internet. Laundry machines are on the basement floor and accept coins or Hokie Passport debit, with Laundry Web showing machine availability. Owens is the closest dining hall. Miles has a volleyball court and plenty of green space outside and sits close to the Washington Street tennis courts. At 224 male first-year residents, it is a mid-sized all-first-year community with close proximity to Owens, Cassell Coliseum, and the Creativity and Innovation District. Visitation runs Sunday-Thursday 10:00 a.m. to midnight and Friday-Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.
Move-in day
Miles Hall move-in falls within Virginia Tech's August 18-20, 2026 window for first-time-in-college and transfer students. Students are emailed in early July about time-slot signup and choose their slot in mid-to-late July. Miles is building #27 in campus quadrant J-5, on the eastern edge of the residential side of campus near Owens. VT publishes drop-off and parking instructions per building, so check the move-in map or your hall's individualized instructions. Hokie Helpers assist on arrival and give access to moving carts and dollies, which helps in a multi-floor traditional hall like this one.
