Virginia Tech requires every incoming first-year student to live on campus, with most freshmen landing in traditional, community-bathroom halls like Slusher, Miles, Johnson, and Upper Quad Hall North. Air conditioning is itemized per building on VT's own hall pages and it varies — several of the biggest first-year halls, including Slusher, run heat-only — and every room already comes with a university-supplied MicroFridge, so students shouldn't pack their own microwave or fridge. Fall 2026 first-year move-in runs August 18-20, with students picking a staggered arrival time slot online in July.

What to bring to Virginia Techdorms — and what’s already there
Every Virginia Techfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.
⚠ Only two UL-listed power strips per student are allowed, they may not be plugged into one another, and no extension cords of any kind are permitted.
⚠ E-scooters, hoverboards, and other EPAMDs — and their chargers — may not be used, stored, or charged in any university building, or at any exterior campus outlet.
⚠ Combustible decorations can cover no more than approximately 10% of a room's total wall surface, and no materials of any kind may be hung from ceilings.
⚠ Beds use the room's own loftable furniture only — self-built, purchased, or rented lofts and "bed risers" are banned as instability hazards.
⚠ Bringing your own microwave or fridge violates housing policy since one MicroFridge combo unit is already provided in every room.

Common questions about Virginia Tech dorms
- Are freshmen required to live on campus at Virginia Tech?
- Yes. All incoming first-year students must live on campus unless they are approved for an exemption — residing with parents or close relatives who are established residents of the community, being married and living with a spouse, being a military veteran of at least six months' active duty, being at least 21 years old, or having the condition waived under another binding agreement with the university. Waivers are requested through the StarRez Portal.
- What size mattress do Virginia Tech dorm beds use?
- Every residence hall bed is a Twin XL mattress, which VT's Housing Policies state as 36" x 80". No bed larger than Twin XL is permitted without approval from Services for Students with Disabilities and Housing Services.
- Can I bring my own mini fridge or microwave?
- No. Every student room already includes a MicroFridge — a combination microwave and refrigerator/freezer unit — and Housing's policy states no other microwave or refrigerator is permitted.
- Are Virginia Tech dorms air-conditioned?
- It depends on the hall, and VT lists it per building. Of the halls whose student population is specifically first-year, only Upper Quad Hall North has air conditioning — Slusher, Miles, Johnson, Barringer, Whitehurst, Campbell Main, and Campbell East are all listed "Air Conditioning: No." Check the specific hall's listing before assuming either way.
- When do first-year students move in for Fall 2026?
- First-time-in-college and transfer students arrive Tuesday-Thursday, August 18-20, 2026. Students are emailed in early July about signing up for a move-in time slot and make their selection in mid-to-late July. Returning civilian students arrive August 21-23 and returning cadets August 22-23.
