James Madison University Freshman Dorms 2026
James Madison University requires all first-year students to live in university residence halls for both fall and spring semesters, placing freshmen in traditional or suite-style doubles across six residential areas: Bluestone, Hillside, Lake, Skyline, Tree Houses, and the Village. Every bed on campus is a Twin XL that JMU publishes as 36" wide by 80" long, though the frame type varies by hall -- most halls get an adjustable loft bed, while a few list a plain adjustable bed or an adjustable/bunkable bed with only 5" to 28" of clearance. Most halls have central A/C; the exceptions are the Village Area (excluding Potomac), Eagle, and Shorts. ⚠ Village Area halls (except Potomac), Eagle Hall, and Shorts Hall have no central A/C -- only the suite areas and TV lounges are cooled.
⚠ Bed frame type varies by hall -- not every hall gets a true loft bed. Village halls and floors 1-5 of Eagle top out at 28" of clearance, and a few halls (including Wayland and Harper Allen-Lee) are listed as an "Adjustable Bed" rather than an "Adjustable Loft Bed." - What size bed do JMU dorm rooms have?
- All JMU residence hall beds measure 36" wide by 80" long, which JMU calls Twin XL; students over 6'8" can contact Residence Life at res-life@jmu.edu about a longer bed. How high the bed can be raised or lofted depends on the hall.
- Can I bring a microwave or air fryer?
- No -- personal microwaves, air fryers, and toaster ovens are prohibited in student rooms outside the Apartments on Grace. The only in-room combo unit allowed is a MicroFridge rented through JMU's partnership.
- Are JMU dorms air-conditioned?
- Most are. JMU states that all Village halls excluding Potomac, plus Eagle and Shorts, do not have central A/C (their suite areas and TV lounges are cooled), and that all other halls have central A/C.
- Is on-campus housing required for freshmen?
- Yes -- JMU requires all first-year students to live in university residence halls for both fall and spring semesters. Exceptions may be granted for students commuting from within 60 miles of a parent's or guardian's permanent address, students 21 or older, students with prior active duty military service, and students who are married or have a dependent minor living with them.
- When do first-year students move in for Fall 2026?
- First-year Move-In Appointments run Friday, August 21 through Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with appointment selection August 3-12. Upperclass and transfer move-in follows on August 23-24, and classes begin Wednesday, August 26.
