University of Virginia Freshman Dorms 2026

All first-year students must live on Grounds — this is a real, universal mandate with only case-by-case exceptions (non-traditional age, parents). Move-in is split by building/room assignment: Thursday Aug 20 or Friday Aug 21, 2026, released with room assignments in late June. First-years may not register or park a vehicle on Grounds at all.

What to bring to University of Virginiadorms — and what’s already there

Every UVAfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

First-year students may NOT have a car on Grounds — no exceptions except an approved SDAC disability accommodation.

Personal air conditioners are banned; all first-year rooms already have building-installed AC.

Only one Melvin-Corp-rented combination micro-fridge is allowed per first-year room (single or double) — personal fridges/microwaves are not permitted.

Living on Grounds is mandatory for all first-years; off-Grounds requests are granted only case-by-case for extraordinary circumstances via housing@virginia.edu.
