VCU Freshman Dorms 2026
VCU's first-year students land in one of five residence communities on the Monroe Park Campus in downtown Richmond — Rhoads Hall, Brandt Hall, Gladding Residence Center, Gladding Residence Center III, or the Honors College. Every one of them is air-conditioned, and every room has an extra-long twin bed (36" x 80"), desk, and chair. Rhoads, Brandt, GRC and the Honors College each list a university-provided Microfridge in every bedroom, so students there skip buying a mini-fridge or microwave; GRC III instead provides a refrigerator and microwave in each suite. On-campus housing isn't mandatory for freshmen, but VCU 'highly recommends' it, and 2026 academic-year move-in runs August 14-15.

What to bring to VCUdorms — and what’s already there
Every VCUfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.
⚠ Personal air conditioners and space heaters are both banned — every VCU first-year hall is already listed as air-conditioned. Ceiling fans are also prohibited; VCU does not publish which fan types are permitted, so confirm with Residence Life before buying one.
⚠ Personal refrigerators and freezers are prohibited because VCU supplies the appliance — a Microfridge in each bedroom in Rhoads, Brandt and GRC, and a refrigerator plus microwave in each suite in GRC III.
⚠ Student-supplied loft equipment, bed lofts and cinder blocks are banned. Brandt and GRC III already come with VCU-provided low-loft frames; Rhoads and GRC use standard-height frames.
⚠ Hoverboards, e-bikes and electric scooters cannot be used, possessed, charged, or stored anywhere in the halls.
⚠ Desk lamps with built-in USB charging ports and USB outlet adapters/extenders are both on the prohibited list — buy a plain desk lamp and a surge protector that meets university safety standards.
⚠ A residential dining plan is required in all four main first-year halls — VCU lists 'Dining plan: Required' on Rhoads, Brandt, GRC and GRC III.
