Living in Gladding Center: what to know before you pack
The room
Gladding Residence Center is VCU's largest first-year hall — a published capacity of 1,518 — mixing 2-person traditional doubles with 4-person semi-suites. Every bedroom has an extra-long twin bed (36" x 80") with four built-in under-bed drawers, plus a desk with a rolling chair and a closet, and VCU notes that all rooms come with a Microfridge and built-in USB charging ports. Semi-suite residents share one bathroom per 4-person unit with one tub/shower and one toilet, while the two sinks are in each bedroom rather than the bathroom; traditional-room residents use two hall bathrooms per floor with multiple vanities and sinks, plus private shower and toilet stalls with floor-to-ceiling dividers.
Day to day
GRC's size is offset by its structure: the building is subdivided into six neighborhoods of roughly 125-200 students, each with its own shared kitchen, laundry, study areas and lounges, which VCU describes as providing "an intimate community." Check-in is in the main lobby of Gladding Residence Center at 721 W. Main St., Richmond, VA 23220, and students need a VCUCard or valid state ID. Follow VCU Police and volunteer instructions to pull up near the building and unload, then move the vehicle to the Main Street parking deck for long-term parking.
