Living in South Academy Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
South Academy's doubles and triples come with a Twin XL bed on a frame UD describes as adjustable to 30 inches (floor to bedspring); the page publishes that maximum but no minimum. Each resident also gets a wardrobe with two doors and four drawers, a 3-drawer chest measuring 18 inches wide by 19.5 inches deep by 30 inches high, and a writing table with chair, with the desk measuring 30 inches wide by 24 inches deep. The chest is worth planning around: UD notes it "will fit under bed at highest adjustment," so at the top setting the chest itself becomes the under-bed storage rather than something you need to buy. UD adds that individual room layouts may vary slightly and that furnishings can change at any time, so incoming roommates should compare their actual assignment rather than assume a single template. Day to day
The building has elevators, a first-floor kitchen and a first-floor laundry room, and lounges on each floor plus a large lounge and study lounge on the main floor. The main lounge has a piano and a projector screen; the separate quiet lounge is furnished with couches and lounge chairs for studying. Bathrooms are shared on the floors. South Academy sits at 412 Academy Street on South Central Campus, near Caesar Rodney and just behind Kent Hall, giving residents a similar dining and social footprint to the rest of that side of campus.
Move-in day
South Academy shares the university-wide first-year move-in date of Saturday, August 22, 2026, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with each student getting an individual appointment time rather than a hall-specific day. Check-in begins at the Bob Carpenter Center for a room key, a dash tag for one vehicle, directions to the unloading zone and a long-term parking map, followed by a 15-minute unload window at the hall with Blue Hen Helper volunteers assisting. South Academy's elevators make it easier to move belongings to upper floors inside that window.
