- UD publishes two different Gilbert triple layouts -- one with two beds bunked, one with all three on the floor -- and says layouts for specific rooms are not available, so confirm with roommates before buying storage that assumes a fixed configuration.
- Bed risers are not allowed under a bunked bed, which rules them out for the two bunked beds in a bunked-configuration triple.
- Frames adjust 10-30 in.; personal lofts are banned, but risers are allowed under a bed that is not bunked.
Living in Eliphalet Gilbert Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Gilbert rooms are traditional doubles and triples furnished with a Twin XL bed on a frame that adjusts from 10 inches to 30 inches (floor to bedspring), a wardrobe with two doors and four drawers, and a writing table with chair. There is no closet in the traditional sense -- the wardrobe does that job -- so slim over-the-door organizers and under-bed bins that clear the lowest adjustable height are the most useful extra storage. UD lists Gilbert with air conditioning. Triples are the wildcard: UD's virtual tour shows a triple with two XL twin beds bunked and a third bed on the far side, while its own floor plan example shows a triple with all three beds on the floor, captioned as an example only because "individual room layouts may vary slightly and layouts for specific rooms are not available." Windows have pull-down shades.
Day to day
Gilbert has elevators, which sets it apart from several other East Campus halls that are walk-up only. Each floor has a study lounge, and there is a large first-floor lounge with a television. The kitchen and the laundry room are both on the first floor rather than on every floor. Community bathrooms are shared by floor in a Z-shaped layout -- two standard shower stalls, one ADA-accessible shower stall, a counter with three sinks, and three toilet stalls -- and they include free menstrual product dispensers. It is a standard East Campus first-year community: floor-based, RA-supported, with common spaces doing the socializing rather than in-room common areas.
Move-in day
Gilbert residents move in on the same university-wide first-year date as every other first-year hall -- Saturday, August 22, 2026, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. -- with an individually assigned appointment time rather than a hall-specific day. All new first-years check in first at the Bob Carpenter Center to pick up a room key, a dash tag for one vehicle, directions to the residence hall unloading zone, and a map to long-term parking, then drive to Gilbert and unload within 15 minutes of arriving. Blue Hen Helper volunteers in yellow T-shirts are stationed in each area of campus to help carry belongings in. Because Gilbert has elevators, getting boxes to higher floors is faster than in walk-up halls, but the unload window is the same 15 minutes for everyone.
