What to bring to University of Delawaredorms — and what’s already there

Every UDfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Loft kits are banned campus-wide -- UD says bed lofts "are not permitted, whether they're purchased or self-made" -- so rooms instead have university frames that adjust in height (roughly 6-32 inches depending on hall).

⚠ Bed risers are allowed only under an individual, non-bunked bed, and only up to a five-foot mattress height measured from the floor.

⚠ Track lighting and LED light strips are on UD's prohibited items list, so the strip-light setup most families buy will not be allowed to stay up.

⚠ Air conditioning varies by building, not by campus area: Gilbert, Caesar Rodney, South Academy, Redding, Sharp, Sypherd, Squire and Sussex have it, while Harrington, Lane and Thompson, Smyth, Harter, Cannon and New Castle do not -- check your specific assignment.

⚠ Microwaves over 700 watts, refrigerators over 4.5 cubic feet, or more than one refrigerator per room are against housing policy.

⚠ Russell and Brown halls are closed for fall 2026 and Kent Hall is closed for 2026-27 (reopening fall 2027), so older packing guides that name them are out of date.

⚠ First-year students must check in at the Bob Carpenter Center at their assigned appointment time before driving to their residence hall on move-in day; arriving early just means waiting.

What size are the beds in UD residence halls?

Every first-year room has a Twin XL bed on a frame that adjusts in height -- roughly 6 to 32 inches off the floor depending on the hall -- rather than a fixed-height bunk, though some triples do bunk two of the three beds.

Can I bring a microwave and mini fridge?

Yes. Neither is provided, but a microwave up to 700 watts and one refrigerator up to 4.5 cubic feet per room are allowed.

Are UD dorms air-conditioned?

It depends on the building -- UD says the availability of air conditioning and elevators varies by building. Can I bring LED strip lights?

No. UD's prohibited items list names track lighting and LED light strips outright, so plan on lamps instead.

When do first-year students move in for Fall 2026?

Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with an individually assigned appointment time and check-in first at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Are first-year students required to live on campus?

Yes. UD requires all newly admitted first-year students to live on campus and guarantees them housing for the academic year of admittance.
