Living in Reilly Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Reilly's rooms run roughly 232" x 149" and hold two residents as a standard double, with a discounted triple configuration also offered. Each side gets a height-adjustable twin bed (36" x 80" x 7" mattress), a three-drawer dresser with drawers measuring 28" x 9", a built-in closet, and a desk with chair, one 15" x 8" drawer and a 15" x 16" door unit below it. A small 2-shelf bookshelf and a 3.9 cu ft refrigerator are already in the room, along with wired ethernet and Wi-Fi. Floors are carpeted and each room has its own sink and mirror, though toilets and showers are shared community-style down the hall. NAU does not list air conditioning among Reilly's room features and prohibits bringing your own unit, so a box fan — which NAU puts on its essentials list — is the fix for the warm stretches of the semester.

Day to day

Reilly is coed and houses primarily first-years and sophomores in a seven-story central-campus building with views of the San Francisco Peaks from the upper floors. NAU lists a computer lab, laundry facilities, a small gym and a community kitchen inside, plus floor lounges with whiteboards and tables, a first-floor study lounge by the kitchen, and a large main lobby with a projector and nooks for gathering. The intramural fields are right next door and the Berry Lutz Telescope is a short walk away, which is part of why Reilly reads as a default first-year assignment rather than a small specialty community.

Move-in day

Reilly falls inside NAU's general fall 2026 move-in window, August 19-24 — both NAU's move-in calendar and Campus Living's important-dates page list those exact dates, with an early-arrival day on August 18 at $50 per night. NAU does not publish a per-hall or per-community-type day assignment; every general move-in day is open to all communities, and your date comes from the 40-minute arrival appointment you reserve in the Housing Portal, bookable between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Because Reilly is seven stories served by two elevators, expect queues at peak hours and plan fewer, better-loaded trips rather than many small ones. Classes begin August 24, which is also the last day for general move-in.

Storage & Organization

(8)
  • ⭐ Top pick
Under-bed storage bins or drawersCompare picks →
Check your hall's under-bed clearance on the hall checklist page before buyingReilly Hall beds have Adjusts height; height not published clearance — measure before buying.
  • Adjustable bed risers (set of 4)
Stackable to 3, 5, or 8 inches — lift the bed for far more under-bed storage. Check your frame first; many dorm beds already adjust in height

(13)
  • ⭐ Top pick
Surge protector power strip (6+ outlets)Compare picks →

    Bluetooth speaker (compact)
Optional — keep it compact and respect quiet hours, which most halls enforce

Hook-and-loop straps you can undo and re-bundle — the rearrangeable alternative to zip ties for chargers and monitor cords

Health & Safety

(10)

Comfort & Room

(18)
  • Gym bag / duffel (with shoe pocket)
Gym, weekend trips home, and laundromat hauls — a tote won't cut it
  • Sleep mask + earplugs
Shared room, roommate's lamp, hallway noise — the cheapest sleep upgrade there is
  • Portable white-noise machine
Masks thin dorm walls and a roommate's off-schedule coming and going so it's easier to fall asleep
  • Collapsible storage ottoman
A 36L cube that swallows a bin of gear, holds 250 lb for guest seating or a footrest, then folds flat when you don't need it
  • Odor absorber (charcoal bags)
Skip plug-in fresheners, candles, and wax warmers — most dorms ban them (fire code). Charcoal bags absorb odor with no flame or outlet.
  • Handheld garment steamer
Faster and far more compact than an iron + board. Before you buy: check your school's appliance rules — some restrict irons/steamers — and pick one with auto-shutoff.
  • Slippers / house shoes
Cold, not-always-clean dorm floors — shower shoes are for the bathroom
  • Lint roller (5-pack)
  • Mini tool kit / screwdriver set
For assembling a loft, tightening a wobbly bed frame, and move-in boxes
  • Water filter pitcher (Brita)
Dorm tap water, no kitchen filter — a 6-cup fits in a mini-fridge

Calmer, deeper sleep in a noisy hall — sized to a dorm bed
  • Compact HEPA air purifier
Quiet desktop unit for dusty old buildings, allergies, and roommate smells
  • Folding saucer / lounge chair
The extra seat a dorm never has — folds flat when you don't need it
  • Mini projector (movie nights)
Turns a blank wall into a movie night — a floor favorite
  • Waterproof outdoor blanket
For quad hangs, tailgates, and games on damp grass
  • Essential-oil diffuser
Water-based ultrasonic (no flame) — the dorm-safe way to freshen a roomBefore you buy: some schools restrict diffusers, humidifiers, or scented devices — check your housing rules, and pick one with auto shut-off.

Microwave- and dishwasher-safe plates, bowls, and cups so you're not eating ramen out of the pot

  • Bottle & straw brush set
Cleans the straws and narrow necks of Stanley-style tumblers your other brushes can't reach

  • Safety box opener
Ceramic auto-retract blade opens the mountain of move-in boxes without slicing what's inside — safe and dorm-allowed
  • UNO / card games
The cheapest way to meet your whole floor in week one

Move-In Day Gear

(4)
  • Wheeled rolling moving bag
Wheels and a pull handle let you drag a fully loaded 600D bag up the stairs instead of hauling the weight — the move-in day lifesaver
  • XL moving & storage bags (6-pack)

Reilly Hall FAQ

Is Reilly Hall a high-rise?
Yes — NAU's own page calls it seven stories tall, and university special collections records it as the "High Rise Dorm" completed in 1968 and renamed for William P. Reilly in 1987. There are two elevators.
Are Reilly's bathrooms private?
No. Rooms have an in-room sink and mirror, but toilets and showers are community-style, shared by the floor.
Can Reilly's beds be lofted?
No — NAU describes Reilly's frame as an adjustable twin bed, not a loftable one, and does not publish a clearance figure. Don't plan a workaround either: loft kits and cinder blocks are both on NAU's prohibited list. Email Campus.Living@nau.edu if you need a specific frame height.
Does Reilly have singles?
NAU's page lists two residents per room as standard plus a discounted triple option; it does not list a single-room option in Reilly.
Is Reilly Hall a good hall to live in?
That depends on what you're optimizing for, but here's what's verified: Reilly Hall has Twin, 36"x80"x7", adjustable height beds with Adjusts height; height not published of under-bed storage, and is not air conditioned. Northern Arizona University provides dresser (3 drawers, each 28"x9"), built-in closet, desk with chair and storage, small 2-shelf bookshelf, refrigerator (3.9 cu ft), carpet flooring, in-room sink and mirror, shower curtain, ethernet and Wi-Fi in every room. Compare those specifics against your priorities — or see how Reilly Hall stacks up against Northern Arizona University's other halls above.
