What to bring to Northern Arizona Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every NAUfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ NAU does not require first-year students to live on campus, though its admissions office says the vast majority choose to.

⚠ None of these four halls list in-room air conditioning in NAU's own room-feature lists — only the Honors College does — and personal air conditioners are on NAU's prohibited list, so pack a box fan.

⚠ Microwaves are allowed only at 700 watts or less; hot plates, toasters, toaster ovens, air fryers and George Foreman-style grills are banned campus-wide.

⚠ Do not buy a loft kit, bed risers or cinder blocks — NAU prohibits all three, and Tinsley's issued bed frame already lofts.

Common questions about Northern Arizona University dorms

What size are the beds in NAU dorms?

In Reilly, Sechrist, Tinsley and Gabaldon the mattress is a 36" x 80" x 7" twin — NAU lists that size on each hall's page and again on its What to Bring list. The frame is height-adjustable in Reilly, Sechrist and Gabaldon, and loftable in Tinsley. Don't assume that size campus-wide: the Honors College uses a longer 38" x 78" x 8.5" extended twin, so Honors students need different sheets.

Are NAU dorms air conditioned?

Not in these four. NAU itemizes room features hall by hall, and air conditioning appears only on the Honors College list ("Air conditioning and ceiling fan"); Reilly, Sechrist, Tinsley and Gabaldon don't list it, and NAU's What to Bring page puts "Air conditioner" in the prohibited column, so you can't add one. Flagstaff's roughly 7,000-foot elevation keeps summers mild, and NAU lists a box fan as an essential. Can I bring a fridge and microwave?

Skip the fridge. NAU says "All rooms have furniture, a refrigerator with freezer, wired ethernet, and Wi-Fi connectivity," and each of these halls issues a small 3.9 cu ft unit. You may bring one microwave rated 700 watts or less.

Are freshmen required to live on campus at NAU?

No. NAU's admissions FAQ says that "although NAU does not require freshmen to live on campus, the vast majority choose to do so." There is no published live-on requirement, and no first-year housing guarantee deadline appears on NAU's own pages.

When is fall 2026 move-in at NAU?

General move-in runs August 19-24, 2026, with an early-arrival day on August 18 at $50 per night (approved groups arrive August 17). Classes begin August 24, which is also the last day for general move-in. NAU does not assign halls to particular days — you reserve a 40-minute arrival appointment between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. in the Housing Portal.
