What to bring to University of Arizonadorms — and what’s already there

Every U of Afreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Full-size refrigerators, space heaters, candles, and open-flame or open-coil appliances (toasters, hot plates, air fryers, instant pots) are banned campus-wide for fire safety.

⚠ Early arrival before the official August 18-20, 2026 move-in window costs a non-refundable $180 fee, is limited to August 15-17, and is first-come, first-served with limited timeslots.

⚠ On-campus living is described by UA as an 'expectation' for first-years, not an absolute mandate — students can request an exemption (living with a parent/guardian/relative over 21 within 30 miles, age 21+, veteran, married, legal dependent, disability/medical condition, extreme financial hardship, or conflicting religious beliefs), evaluated case by case.

⚠ How much you can control your room's temperature depends on the building's system: Honors Village and Pima Lodge use Direct Expansion units a resident may adjust to their own needs; four-pipe fan coil halls (including Árbol de la Vida, Colonia de la Paz, and Yuma) run heating and cooling on demand without a manual changeover; and two-pipe fan coil halls (including Coronado) put the entire building into a heating, off-neutral, or cooling set at once, so an individual room cannot be switched independently.

Common questions about University of Arizona dorms

What size are the beds in UA dorms?

Most rooms use an 80-inch extra-long Twin (Twin XL) bed and mattress, and UA notes full beds and mattresses are available in some dorms. Per UA Housing's FAQ, beds can be bunked and/or height-adjusted unless the hall appears on its restriction list: Apache-Santa Cruz, Graham-Greenlee, Honors Village, and Kaibab-Huachuca allow neither, while Babcock, Colonia de la Paz, and Manzanita-Mohave allow height adjustment but not bunking.

What should students NOT bring?

UA Housing's non-approved items list bans candles, incense and candle warmers, toasters and other open-coil or open-flame devices (including George Foreman-style grills, waffle irons, and fondue pots), instant pots and air fryers, hot pots and induction burners, halogen lamps, adhesive LED light strips, space heaters, full-size refrigerators, wireless or wired routers, wireless and 3D printers, hoverboards and e-scooters, beer pong tables, weapons including simulated ones, hookahs, drugs, alcohol (unless 21+), and pets other than non-dangerous fish in a 10-gallon or smaller tank.

Can students bring their own fridge and microwave?

Yes — residents may bring their own, one per resident, or rent a Microfridge combined refrigerator-microwave unit for the academic year through UA Housing's contracted vendor. Full-size refrigerators are not allowed, though exceptions are available for medical or dietary needs.

Are first-year students required to live on campus?

UA calls it an 'expectation' rather than a strict requirement: living on campus is the expectation for first-year students attending the main campus, but students can request an exemption for reasons including living with a parent, guardian, or relative over 21 within 30 miles of campus, being 21 by the first day of school, being a veteran, being married, having a legal dependent, a disability or medical condition, extreme financial hardship, or a conflict with strongly held religious beliefs. Requests are evaluated case by case.

When is 2026 move-in for new students?

New/first-year student move-in runs August 18-20, 2026, with Early Move-In for Individuals available on August 15, 16, or 17 for a non-refundable $180 fee and limited, first-come first-served timeslots. Fall classes begin August 24, 2026. Students select their move-in day and time and download an unloading dash pass through Pre-Arrival Online Check-In in My UAHome.
