Living in Speare Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Speare Hall's first-year rooms come in standard single, standard double and economy double configurations, all with a university-provided bed, desk, chair, dresser and closet space. Bedrooms are tiled rather than carpeted, and a window shade is included, matching the finish found across Northeastern's traditional-style halls. Northeastern deliberately does not publish room layouts, closet counts or square footage -- its move-in page says so outright -- and rate differences between the economy and standard double live in the 2026-2027 First Year Rate Chart PDF, so treat any specific size or price comparison as unconfirmed until you check that chart. What is confirmed is the furniture set: traditional corridor rooms are built around a Twin XL bed, desk and dresser, so vertical storage (over-the-door racks, stackable bins) goes a long way. Skip bed risers -- they're banned -- and ask Facilities to raise the bed on its legs if you want clearance underneath.
Day to day
Speare Hall runs proctor coverage or secured entryways 24 hours a day and, as a Traditional Style building, uses communal corridor bathrooms rather than in-suite baths. It has dual entrances on Huntington Ave and Speare Place, an elevator, on-site laundry, a mixture of multimedia and study lounges on each floor, and vending machines on the main level. One quirk that makes Speare feel more like a campus crossroads than a typical dorm: Speare Commons, on the lower and main levels, houses Housing & Residential Life, Husky Card Services, the ResMail Service Center and the Residential Safety Office, so residents and students from other halls pass through regularly for ID cards, mail and housing paperwork. That foot traffic makes it an easy, central meeting point for the Speare/Stetson first-year cluster.
Move-in day
Speare Hall sits at 10 Speare Place, right next to Stetson Hall East in Northeastern's Fenway-adjacent first-year cluster, with entrances on both Huntington Ave and Speare Place. As of August 17, 2026, Northeastern had not posted building-by-building Fall 2026 move-in day and time assignments -- the housing office says arrivals are spread across 5-7 days around and over Labor Day weekend (Monday, September 7, 2026) leading up to classes on Wednesday, September 9, with the specific schedule, parking passes and driving-direction maps to be posted in August and sent via each student's Northeastern email. University housing isn't available between the August 16 Summer B move-out and September 1. With two street-level entrances, families should watch for whichever entrance corresponds to their assigned check-in point, and use the on-site moving hampers (photo ID required to borrow) rather than rigid luggage to make elevator trips faster. Oversized vehicles over 6 ft 8 in and overnight parking are not provided.
