What to bring to Northeastern Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Northeasternfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Standalone personal microwaves are banned in traditional and suite-style halls -- only a MicroFridge unit is allowed. You can still bring your own mini fridge if it is 3.5 cubic feet or smaller (allowed in appropriately wired halls).

⚠ Student-owned air conditioners of any type -- window, portable, or vented floor units -- are prohibited in university housing, including halls with no central air. The university's only stated exception is AC units rented through Northeastern for university-owned facilities during the summer.

⚠ Bed risers and cinder blocks are prohibited and you may not build or take apart a loft yourself. If you want your bed raised for under-bed storage, submit a Facilities work request after you arrive -- do not buy lift hardware.

⚠ As of August 17, 2026, Northeastern had NOT published exact Fall 2026 move-in days/times by building. The housing site says only that move-in spans 5-7 days around and over Labor Day weekend and that per-building details "will be posted here in August." Do not book travel until your assignment email arrives.

⚠ No oversized vehicles (over 6 ft 8 in including roof racks or rooftop storage) and no overnight parking are provided on move-in day; parking passes are valid only on designated moving days and parking is first come, first served.

⚠ First-years admitted for fall (or via NUin) must live on campus for two full years unless a co-op or global program takes them outside Boston.

Common questions about Northeastern University dorms

What size beds are in Northeastern dorms?

Twin XL. Northeastern's What to Bring page tells students to bring "Twin XL Sheets" and a "Twin XL Blanket or Comforter," but the university does not publish its exact mattress dimensions anywhere. Retail-standard Twin XL is 38 by 80 inches; some campus mattresses run a bit narrower, so buy Twin XL sheets (they fit the 80-inch length either way) and confirm with Residence Life if an exact fit matters.

Can I loft or raise my bed at Northeastern?

Your bed can be raised, but not by you. Northeastern's Guide to Residence Hall Living says beds can be raised on their legs by submitting a work request with Facilities, and that rails and ladders are standard on any bed lofted over 5 feet. Building or taking apart a loft yourself is not allowed, and bed risers and cinder blocks are prohibited outright -- so don't buy riser or loft kits. De-lofting requests are granted only if the room permits.

Can I bring a microwave?

No. Standalone microwaves are prohibited in all traditional and suite-style halls (only apartment-style units with kitchens are exempt). If you want one, rent a MicroFridge combined mini-fridge/microwave through the university's vendor program before move-in. A fridge alone is fine on its own: personal mini fridges up to 3.5 cubic feet are permitted, in appropriately wired halls.

Is on-campus housing required for first-year students?

Yes. Northeastern states that "undergraduates who enter as first-year students through fall admission and NUin are required to live in university housing during their first and second years, unless a global or co-op experience takes them outside of the city of Boston." Students seeking an exemption go through the residency waiver process.

When is Fall 2026 move-in?

Northeastern had not published specific Fall 2026 move-in dates as of August 17, 2026. The housing office says only that fall move-in "takes place over the course of 5-7 days around and over Labor Day Weekend leading up to the first day of classes," with per-building dates, parking passes and maps to be "posted here in August." Labor Day is Monday, September 7, 2026 and classes start Wednesday, September 9, 2026, and university housing isn't available until September 1 -- so the window is roughly September 2-8. Every student gets a specific date and time by Northeastern email based on room assignment; the university explicitly advises against booking travel until that email arrives.

Does Northeastern's co-op program affect first-year housing?

Not for your first year. Students must complete three full-time fall/spring semesters before a first co-op, so the earliest co-op start is the spring of sophomore year. Incoming first-years are on campus for both the fall and spring semesters rather than rotating off campus for a work term the way many upperclass students do.
