What size bed does Boston University use?

All BU freshman dorms use XL Twin beds — 80 inches long and approximately 38 inches wide. Standard twin sheets won't fit; they're cut for a 75-inch mattress and will pull off the corners of an 80-inch bed. Buy bedding labeled Twin XL or Extra-Long Twin specifically. This applies to every BU hall — Warren Towers, West Campus, The Towers, and Kilachand all use the same XL Twin standard. Most retailers stock Twin XL in the same section as regular twin but in a different package.

Do BU dorms have air conditioning?

Almost none. Warren Towers Tower A reopened Fall 2026 with central AC after a full renovation. Every other freshman hall — Warren Tower C, West Campus (Claflin, Sleeper, Rich), The Towers, and Kilachand — has no air conditioning. Personal AC units are prohibited campus-wide regardless of hall. BU does allow one fan per person, but the diameter cap is 12 inches per BU Housing policy — confirm before buying a large box fan. Boston in late August and early September is genuinely warm; the fan is not optional.

Can I bring a microwave to BU?

No. Personal microwaves are prohibited in all BU residence halls — this applies even if your roommate doesn't bring one and your room has no provided unit. If you want microwave access, the official solution is renting a MicroFridge combo unit through BU Vending Services, which combines a microwave and mini-fridge in one appliance. Personal mini-fridges are allowed separately (up to 4 cubic feet), but if you want both a fridge and a microwave in one rental, the MicroFridge is the most practical path.

Can I bring a mini-fridge to BU?

Yes — BU allows one personal mini-fridge per room, with a maximum size of 4 cubic feet. That is enough for drinks, a few snacks, and leftovers. Personal microwaves are still prohibited separately, so if you want both cold storage and reheating in one unit, the MicroFridge rental through BU Vending Services is the official all-in-one solution. If you only need a fridge and not a microwave, bringing your own is the cheaper path since you skip the rental fee entirely.

When does BU send housing assignments?

BU typically releases freshman housing assignments in June or July. You'll get your specific hall, tower (for Warren Towers), and room number before summer ends. This matters because the halls at BU vary meaningfully: Warren Towers Tower A has AC after its 2026 renovation while Tower C does not, West Campus is a shuttle ride away from main campus, and Kilachand is an honors-focused building. Don't buy anything hall-specific — particularly a fan strategy or AC plan — until you know your assignment.
