What to bring to University of Connecticutdorms — and what’s already there

Every UConnfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Personal air conditioners are banned campus-wide, even in the many halls that have no AC installed — a fan is the fallback for most first-years.

⚠ Halogen lamps of ANY kind (desk, floor, or table) are banned outright under UConn housing policy, not just restricted by wattage.

⚠ Self-adhesive LED light strips are on UConn's not-permitted list — Campus Housing tells students to hang decor with painter's tape instead.

⚠ First-year students required to live on campus cannot cancel housing without an approved residency-requirement exemption; the Fall 2026 exemption request deadline was July 1, 2026.

Common questions about University of Connecticut dorms

What size mattress do UConn dorm beds use?

An XL twin, 80" x 36", in every traditional residence hall room on the Storrs campus. UConn's Items to Bring page lists XL Twin for residence halls, suites, and Northwood Apartments; some Charter Oak and Hilltop apartment layouts use Full Size instead.

What does UConn provide vs. what should I bring?

UConn provides the bed and mattress, dresser/bureau, closet or wardrobe, desk with chair, and wired and wireless internet. Students bring bedding, towels, cleaning supplies, a fan, and other room items — the full list is on Campus Housing's Items to Bring page.

Can I bring a mini-fridge and microwave?

Yes. One mini-fridge no more than 36" tall with a 3-prong grounded plug is allowed per room (UConn does not rent fridges), and microwaves of 700 watts or less are permitted. Personal air conditioners are not allowed in any building.

Are UConn dorms air-conditioned?

Many are not. Per UConn's Amenities by Area table, Towers, Alumni Quad, North Campus, Buckley/Shippee, Hilltop Halls, McMahon, East Campus, West Campus, and Northwood Apartments have no AC. Werth Tower, Busby, Garrigus, South Campus, Connecticut Hall, Husky Village, Charter Oak, and Hilltop Apartments do. In Northwest, Terry and Rogers are air-conditioned as of Fall 2026 while the other four buildings are not.

When do first-year students move in for Fall 2026?

August 27 or 28, 2026 — Campus Housing assigns each incoming first-year student one of the two days. Upper-class and transfer students move in August 29-30.

Which UConn halls do first-year students live in?

UConn's FAQ names the designated freshman and sophomore areas as Werth Tower (primarily Learning Communities), Alumni Quadrangle, Towers Quadrangle, Buckley/Shippee (Honors students only), and Hicks and Grange Halls in East Campus. Most first-year housing is a traditional double.
