Common questions about NYU dorms

What size bed does NYU use?
Almost all NYU halls use XL Twin beds — the 80-inch length that requires bedding explicitly labeled XL Twin or Extra-Long Twin. The one exception is Clark Street Hall in Brooklyn, which serves Tandon School of Engineering students and has standard Twin (75") beds. If you know you're in Clark Street, standard twin sheets work; for every other NYU hall, they won't. Check your assignment letter before buying bedding — the hall name is the tell. XL Twin sheets are available at most major retailers.
Do NYU dorms have air conditioning?
Yes — all NYU freshman halls are air-conditioned, either building-wide or within the suites. Rubin Hall was fully retrofitted with building-wide central AC when it reopened in Fall 2024 after its renovation. New York City in August is hot and humid, and the fact that every NYU hall has AC is a meaningful advantage over peer schools where coverage is inconsistent. You will not need a portable fan for cooling the way you would at a school like Brown or BU.
Can I bring a mini-fridge to NYU?
Yes — unlike most schools, NYU allows personal mini-fridges. Traditional-style suite halls already include a shared suite fridge and microwave, so a personal fridge is additional rather than the only option. Apartment-style halls like University Hall and Third North have private kitchens with a full-size fridge, so a personal unit is redundant there. In traditional suites where you share a suite fridge with several people, bringing a personal mini-fridge for your own room is a reasonable choice and within policy.
Can I bring a toaster or microwave to NYU?
Toaster ovens and hot plates are prohibited in all NYU residence halls regardless of hall type. Apartment-style halls (University Hall, Third North) have private kitchens where you can cook, but toaster ovens are still banned even there. Traditional-style suites include a shared microwave already — do not bring a separate microwave. If you are in a traditional suite and want to make toast, a stovetop pan in the common kitchen is the workaround; a toaster or toaster oven will be confiscated.
When does NYU send housing assignments?
NYU typically releases freshman housing assignments in late June or early July. You'll receive your hall and room assignment through your NYU email. This matters because NYU halls vary significantly — suite-style halls like Brittany and Goddard have shared suite amenities, while apartment-style halls like University Hall and Third North have private kitchens. The bed type also depends on your hall (Clark Street is standard Twin; all others are XL Twin). Don't buy bedding or hall-specific gear until you have the assignment in hand.
