Common questions about Brown University dorms
- What size bed does Brown University use?
- All Brown freshman halls use XL Twin beds (36"×80") — slightly narrower than the industry-standard 38". Standard twin sheets will slip right off. Buy bedding labeled XL Twin specifically.
- Which Brown freshman halls have air conditioning?
- Andrews reportedly has central AC from its renovation, though residents describe the cooling as uneven. Metcalf and Miller's AC status is unconfirmed — assume none. Keeney Quad, Morriss, Champlin, Emery, and Woolley have no AC. Move-in is late August and Providence is humid — pack a fan unless your assignment letter says Andrews, and even then a small one is cheap insurance.
- Can I bring candles to Brown?
- No. Brown fines $100 per candle found — any kind, including birthday candles and wax melts. This is enforced and documented in the official Brown Housing Agreement.
- Can I bring a mini-fridge to Brown?
- No. Brown provides a microfridge in every freshman room. Personal fridges and microwaves are prohibited.
- When does Brown send housing assignments?
- Brown typically releases housing assignments in late June or early July for incoming freshmen. You'll know your hall before you need to buy anything hall-specific.
