Living in Miller Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Miller is the third hall of the 2013 Pembroke Quad renovation, and with Metcalf it carries a LEED Gold rating. The project converted singles to doubles, so rooms are mostly two-person with all-new finishes and systems. Beds are the Brown-standard XL Twin with 11 inches of clearance underneath — flat under-bed bins fit; deep ones don't.
Day to day
Communal bathrooms, fully redone in the renovation. Miller and Metcalf were historically connected at certain levels, but the renovation deliberately made them independent buildings to create smaller living communities — Miller residents consistently rank it among the most desirable freshman assignments at Brown.
Move-in day
Elevator in the building, Pembroke Quad location, Andrews Commons dining next door at Andrews. On cooling: no official confirmation that Miller's renovation included AC, so pack the fan — Providence Augusts don't forgive optimism.

- Does Miller Hall have air conditioning?
- Unconfirmed. The 2013 renovation rebuilt Miller's building systems alongside Metcalf — both earned LEED Gold — but we have not found official confirmation that central AC was part of the project. Assume there is no AC and plan accordingly. Providence in August is hot and humid. A small box fan is not heavy, and a fan you did not need is a better outcome than an August without one in a hall where cooling is unconfirmed. Pack it first. Pack it first.
- Is Miller a good freshman hall?
- Residents consistently rank Miller among Brown's most desirable freshman assignments. The 2013 renovation brought all-new finishes and systems, and with Metcalf it achieved a LEED Gold certification — the kind of building quality that shows up in better air quality, insulation, and day-to-day comfort. The building has a deliberately smaller community feel than Keeney Quad, and Andrews Commons dining is next door at Andrews Hall. It's a combination of modern construction, convenient food access, and a quieter corner of campus that's hard to beat as a freshman assignment.
- What size are the beds in Miller?
- XL Twin (36" × 80") with 11 inches of under-bed clearance — Brown standard across every freshman hall. The 36-inch width is narrower than a standard twin, so sheets specifically labeled XL Twin are required; standard twin sheets will not fit. For storage, measure under-bed bins against the 11-inch clearance before buying. Flat bins slide under easily; cube-style bins typically do not. This applies to every Miller room regardless of floor or configuration. This is consistent across every room in the building regardless of floor.
- Is there an elevator in Miller?
- Yes, Miller has an elevator — part of the 2013 renovation that rebuilt the entire building. It makes move-in significantly easier on the upper floors, and it is a practical advantage throughout the year when you come back from the campus store loaded down. Paired with the Pembroke Quad location and nearby Andrews Commons dining next door, it is one of the more logistically comfortable freshman assignments Brown offers.
