Living in Metcalf Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Metcalf is one of the three Pembroke Quad halls rebuilt in the 2013 Miller-Metcalf-Andrews renovation, and with Miller it earned a LEED Gold rating. The renovation converted singles to doubles, so most rooms house two — fresh finishes and systems throughout, XL Twin beds, 11-inch under-bed clearance. Unlike its sibling Andrews, Metcalf rooms do not have in-room sinks.
Day to day
Bathrooms are communal and were fully redone in the renovation. Miller and Metcalf were connected at certain levels historically but the renovation made them independent structures to create smaller living communities — Metcalf feels like its own house, not a wing.
Move-in day
There's an elevator, and Pembroke Quad is the calmer corner of campus, with Andrews Commons dining one building away. On cooling: we haven't found an official confirmation that Metcalf's renovation included AC, so pack as if it doesn't — a fan you don't need beats an August without one.
Metcalf Hall FAQ
- Does Metcalf Hall have air conditioning?
- Unconfirmed. The 2013 renovation replaced Metcalf's building systems, but we have not found official confirmation that central AC was included. Treat it as no AC until Brown's official housing materials say otherwise. Providence in August is humid and move-in temperatures routinely hit the high 80s. A fan you do not need costs nothing to bring; a summer without one in an unconfirmed hall is genuinely uncomfortable. Pack the fan first, not last. It is the most important item on your list.
- Does Metcalf have in-room sinks like Andrews?
- No — in-room sinks are an Andrews feature, not a Metcalf one. Metcalf uses communal bathrooms on each floor, which were fully renovated in the same 2013 project that rebuilt the building. The bathrooms are modern and clean, but you will need a shower caddy and flip-flops for the commute from your room. If in-room sink access is important to you, that is the one way Andrews rooms are meaningfully different from Metcalf rooms despite sharing the same renovation project.
- What size are the beds in Metcalf?
- XL Twin (36" × 80") with 11 inches of under-bed clearance — Brown standard across every freshman hall. The 36-inch width is slightly narrower than a standard twin, so label-reading matters: buy sheets and a mattress protector explicitly marked XL Twin. Standard twin sheets will slip off the corners. Under-bed clearance is 11 inches — measure bins before buying. Flat under-bed storage works; most vertical cube organizers do not fit under the frame. This is the same across all Metcalf rooms.
- Is there an elevator in Metcalf?
- Yes, Metcalf has an elevator — added as part of the 2013 renovation that rebuilt the building. That makes Metcalf one of the more move-in-friendly Pembroke Quad halls: you will not be carrying mini-fridges and milk crates up four flights of stairs on a humid August afternoon. It also matters throughout the year if you live on an upper floor and come back from the grocery store or campus store with heavy bags. Plan accordingly. Plan your packing strategy around elevator capacity from the start.
