Living in Morriss Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Morriss came out of the summer-2017 renovation with rooms that run larger than most Brown freshman halls — doubles and triples in suite-style configurations grouped around shared lounges. Beds are the standard XL Twin with 11 inches of clearance, and the suite layout means your storage strategy can spill into a shared space your suite actually controls.
Day to day
The headline feature is the bathrooms: semi-private, shared by a suite-sized group instead of a whole hallway — the single most-loved thing residents mention. The 2017 lounge renovation rebuilt the ground floor around a Fireside Lounge with a double-sided gas fireplace, window-facing high-top study seating, and a Game Room with pool and ping-pong tables and a TV lounge. It's the kind of common space other halls visit.
Move-in day
Elevator service makes move-in straightforward. Morriss connects internally to Champlin — together they're the 'Mo-Champ' complex, so your social radius is two buildings wide from day one. No air conditioning: the fan goes in the first box, not the last.

- Does Morriss Hall have air conditioning?
- No. Morriss has no air conditioning. The 2017 renovation rebuilt the common spaces and bathrooms but did not add AC to the rooms. August in Providence is hot and humid, and freshman move-in falls right in the middle of it. A box fan is essential — bring one in the car, not in a shipping box. Windows open for cross-ventilation, and a fan pointed outward in one window while another draws air in makes a genuine difference on the hottest nights.
- Are Morriss bathrooms private?
- Semi-private. Morriss uses suite-style bathrooms shared by a small group of suite-mates rather than the entire floor. This is the feature residents praise most consistently — it means shorter waits, a cleaner space because fewer people share it, and a more comfortable routine than the community bathrooms in Keeney Quad. The 2017 renovation rebuilt the bathrooms as part of the larger suite redesign. If bathroom privacy matters to you in a dorm, Morriss is one of the better Brown assignments for it.

- The 2017 renovation built out the ground floor around two showpiece spaces. The Fireside Lounge has a double-sided gas fireplace, window-facing high-top seating, and study nooks — the kind of space that draws residents from the connected Champlin building too. The Game Room has pool and ping-pong tables and a dedicated TV lounge area. Together they give Morriss one of the best common-space setups of any Brown freshman hall, and because Morriss connects internally to Champlin, both buildings share them.
- What size are the beds in Morriss?
- XL Twin (36" × 80") with 11 inches of under-bed clearance — Brown standard across every freshman hall. The 36-inch width is slightly narrower than a standard twin, so buy sheets specifically labeled XL Twin; standard twin sheets will not stay on the mattress. The 11-inch under-bed clearance is a firm number — flat storage bins slide under easily, but most tall cube organizers will not fit. Measure before you buy to avoid a return trip. Plan accordingly before buying storage.
