Living in Woolley Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Woolley is the other half of the 'Em-Woo' pair, renovated in the same summer-2017 project as Emery, Morriss, and Champlin. Doubles and triples in suite-style configurations, XL Twin beds, 11 inches of clearance under every frame — measure your bins against that number, not against the photo on the box.
Day to day
Semi-private suite-style bathrooms, same as the rest of the 2017 cluster — shared by your small group, not the whole hall. The internal connection to Emery means the two buildings share one social fabric.
Move-in day
Elevator in the building, and the Verney-Woolley dining hall ('V-Dub') is part of the same complex — the name is literally on it. If meal convenience ranks high on your list, Em-Woo and Andrews are the two assignments to hope for. No air conditioning; bring the fan.
Woolley Hall FAQ
- Does Woolley Hall have air conditioning?
- No. Woolley has no air conditioning. The 2017 renovation upgraded the suite bathrooms and common areas but did not add cooling to the rooms. August and September in Providence are hot and humid, and that is exactly when you are moving in and starting the year. A box fan is not optional — it should go in the car for move-in day, not in a shipping box. With opening windows and a fan aimed for cross-ventilation, the rooms become manageable even on the warmest nights.
- Where do Woolley residents eat?
- The Verney-Woolley dining hall — V-Dub, as everyone calls it — is part of the same building complex. The name is literally on the building. You can get to the dining hall without going outside, which is a genuine quality-of-life advantage on cold Providence mornings in December and January. Woolley and Emery together share this dining advantage; they are the only two Brown freshman halls, along with Andrews, where you can reach a full dining hall without stepping outdoors at all.
- Are Woolley bathrooms private?
- Semi-private. Woolley uses suite-style bathrooms shared by a small group of suite-mates, not the full floor. This is the same setup as Emery, Morriss, and Champlin from the same 2017 renovation — fewer users, shorter waits, and a cleaner space than community hallway bathrooms. The bathrooms were fully rebuilt in the 2017 project and are modern and well-maintained. Residents in the 2017 cluster consistently mention the semi-private bathrooms as the feature they appreciate most about the hall. It is a consistent highlight in resident feedback.
- What size are the beds in Woolley?
- XL Twin (36" × 80") with 11 inches of under-bed clearance — Brown standard across every freshman hall. The 36-inch width is narrower than a standard twin, so buy sheets and a mattress protector specifically labeled XL Twin. Standard twin bedding will not stay on properly. For storage, measure under-bed bins against the 11-inch clearance before buying; flat bins work well, and most taller cube-style bins will not fit. This applies to every room in the building. Plan storage accordingly before packing.
