Living in Emery Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Emery was renovated in the summer-2017 Emery-Woolley-Morriss-Champlin project: doubles and triples in suite-style configurations, XL Twin beds, 11 inches of under-bed clearance. The suite arrangement groups a handful of rooms around shared space, which makes the building feel smaller than its headcount.
Day to day
Bathrooms are semi-private — shared by your suite group, not the whole floor. Emery connects internally to Woolley (students call the pair 'Em-Woo'), so the two buildings function as one community for lounges and late-night studying.
Move-in day
There's an elevator, and Emery's location is its quiet superpower: the Verney-Woolley dining hall — 'V-Dub' to everyone on campus — is directly downstairs. Breakfast without going outside, all winter. No air conditioning, so pack the fan first.
Emery Hall FAQ
- Does Emery Hall have air conditioning?
- No. Emery has no air conditioning. The 2017 renovation rebuilt the suite bathrooms and common areas but did not add cooling to the rooms. Move-in is in late August and Providence temperatures in August can be genuinely uncomfortable without airflow. A box fan is essential — it should be in your car on move-in day, not in a shipping box. The building has opening windows, and a fan set up for cross-ventilation pulls heat out effectively overnight. A fan is not optional here.
- Where do Emery residents eat?
- The Verney-Woolley dining hall — V-Dub to everyone on campus — is directly downstairs in the building. That makes Emery's dining commute the second-shortest of any Brown freshman hall, behind only Andrews Commons inside Andrews itself. In January, breakfast in slippers without going outside is a real quality-of-life advantage. V-Dub is a full Brown dining hall with the same menu and meal plan access as any other campus dining option, so proximity comes without any trade-off in food quality at all.
- Are Emery bathrooms private?
- Semi-private. Emery uses suite-style bathrooms shared by a small group of suite-mates, not the full floor or hallway. This is meaningfully different from the community bathroom setup in Keeney Quad — fewer users, shorter waits, and a cleaner space day-to-day. The 2017 renovation rebuilt the bathrooms as part of the larger suite redesign, so they are modern and well-maintained. It is one of the features residents highlight most when talking about what made Emery a comfortable place to live freshman year.
- What size are the beds in Emery?
- XL Twin (36" × 80") with 11 inches of under-bed clearance — Brown standard across every freshman hall. The 36-inch width is slightly narrower than the industry-standard twin, so sheets and mattress protectors must be explicitly labeled XL Twin. Standard twin bedding will not fit. For storage, measure under-bed bins against the 11-inch clearance before buying; flat bins slide under easily and most tall cube-style bins will not fit. The same standard applies to every room in the building. Same standard across all rooms.
