What to bring to University of Rhode Islanddorms — and what’s already there

Every URIfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Personal window and portable air conditioners are prohibited in all URI residence hall rooms; only some halls have built-in A/C, so check your assignment before skipping the fan.

⚠ Bed risers are banned, and lofts or bed support systems are allowed only when provided by URI or HRL staff — request one on the furniture form in URI My Housing after move-in.

⚠ High-wattage appliances are banned under fire code, including air fryers, electric kettles, rice cookers, crockpots, hot plates, space heaters, and anything over 1,000 watts.

Common questions about University of Rhode Island dorms

What size bed does URI provide in first-year rooms?

A Twin XL frame with a built-in height adjustment. URI sets the frames "at a level to allow 30″ of storage underneath the mattress," so you get roughly 30 inches of under-bed clearance without any add-on. Buy Twin XL (36" x 81") sheets — standard twin bedding will not fit.

Can I bring a mini fridge and microwave?

Yes, within URI's published limits: one refrigerator per bedroom not to exceed 3 cubic feet, and a microwave not to exceed 1,000 watts. The URI Campus Store also runs a MicroFridge rental program that combines both in a single unit, which roommates commonly split — but units sell out for the academic year, so reserve early.

Do URI residence hall rooms have air conditioning?

It depends on the hall, so check your assignment. Barlow and Weldin both list "A/C in Rooms: Yes" on their official housing pages, while Butterfield and Adams list "No." Personal window and portable AC units are prohibited university-wide, so if your hall has no built-in cooling a fan is the only option — worth packing for Kingston's warm early-September move-in week.

What's banned from URI dorm rooms?

Air conditioners, bed risers, candles, halogen lamps, space heaters, heating and immersion coils, electric kettles, air fryers, rice cookers, crockpots, toasters, hot plates, grills, anything over 1,000 watts, curtains (microblinds are already installed), and non-surge-protected extension cords. When is Fall 2026 move-in?

URI's major move-in days run September 4-7, 2026. Unloading close to the residence halls is only available during your scheduled 20-minute appointment, and URI sends entrance and scheduling details in its move-in communications. Students who need to arrive sooner can request early move-in for August 31-September 3 at $75 per day: $300 for August 31, $225 for September 1, $150 for September 2, and $75 for September 3. Note that URI's move-in page gives one combined window and does not break September 4-7 down by class year.
