Living in Marsh/Austin/Tupper: what to know before you pack
The room
Marsh/Austin/Tupper (MAT) offers hall-style rooms on UVM's Athletic Campus; UVM's tier document lists singles, doubles and quads while the hall's own page lists singles, doubles and triples, so any of the four is possible. Every room includes the standard XL twin bed, desk, chair, and dresser, and beds can be bunked or lofted on the university frame to open up floor space — the safety rail just has to stay attached. Air conditioning isn't listed for MAT, consistent with every first-year hall outside Central Campus Residence Hall, so a box fan is worth packing. Bathrooms are communal, with both single-gender and mixed-gender floor options depending on assignment. If a quad has been converted down to a triple or double, UVM will remove the extra furniture on request; permanently designated quads keep all four sets, so those rooms stay tight.
Day to day
MAT is home to the Sustainability Learning Community, built around environmental and sustainability-focused programming, and it shares Athletic Campus with Harris/Millis. A kitchen in the MAT Commons supports group cooking, and residents have access to an outdoor amphitheater used for hall events. Indoor bike storage is available, which matters on a campus where a lot of students commute between Athletic, Redstone, and Central Campus buildings on foot or bike. The hall is within walking distance of Harris-Millis Dining, one of UVM's larger dining halls, though it doesn't have its own in-building dining option the way some newer halls do. As a standard-tier hall, MAT sits in UVM's most affordable housing tier.
Move-in day
Fall 2026 first-year move-in falls on Wednesday, August 26 or Thursday, August 27, with UVM assigning each student a specific check-in window through the housing portal in early August. Athletic Campus can see heavy vehicle traffic during move-in as families for MAT and neighboring Harris/Millis arrive at similar times, so following the assigned window closely helps avoid a long wait to unload. Because MAT has no air conditioning, a fan and breathable bedding are worth prioritizing over anything decorative. Students assigned to a permanently designated quad should plan for less closet and floor space, since none of the four furniture sets can be removed; in a quad converted to a triple or double, the extra furniture comes out on request. A personal microwave (700 watts or less) and refrigerator (4.0 cu. ft. or less) are both allowed, or a MicroFridge rental ordered by August 10 will be waiting in the room.
