- Rooms arrive with the beds already lofted on a frame that adjusts between 4 and 30 inches, and South Tower is also on USC's approved DIY loft-kit list -- so anyone layering a kit on top of an already-raised frame must still keep 30 inches between mattress top and the lowest ceiling point including sprinkler heads.

Living in South Tower: what to know before you pack
The room
South Tower rooms are traditional doubles, 16'5" x 12'7" with tile flooring, 102-inch ceilings, and 42" wide x 52" tall windows that do not open. USC describes each room as fully furnished including two lofted beds: an extra-long twin (USC lists the mattress as 80 inches; the frame is 38" wide x 82" long x 36" tall) on a frame that adjusts from 4 inches to a maximum bed height of 30 inches, plus a dresser, a closet, and a desk with chair and mobile pedestal. South Tower is also on USC's approved lofting list, so residents can add a DIY loft kit on top of the adjustable frame if they want more under-bed storage, provided the 30-inch ceiling and sprinkler clearance is met. Microfridge combo units are available to rent rather than built in.
Day to day
As an 18-story tower, South Tower is one of the tallest first-year buildings on campus, with elevator and keycard access throughout. Bathrooms are shared, one per floor, along with a full kitchen on each floor and a basement laundry room. First-floor study rooms give residents a quiet space to work close to home, and the floor count means a large, vertically stacked first-year community rather than the sprawling wings typical of lower traditional halls. Cable is not available in USC residence halls, so plan on streaming over the in-room wired connection or Wi-Fi.
Move-in day
South Tower is not on USC's Friday, August 14 early list, so it participates in the general Saturday, August 15, 2026 move-in day, with 30-minute arrival slots reserved through the Housing Portal. Reservation emails typically go out mid-July and slots can be adjusted through July 31. Because it is an 18-floor high-rise, families should expect elevator waits during peak move-in hours and plan to use stairwells for lighter loads if the queue is long.
