What to bring to University of South Carolinadorms — and what’s already there

Every South Carolinafreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ First-year students are required to live on campus at USC; exemptions are granted only for special circumstances by request to the Housing office.

⚠ Standalone mini fridges are on USC's Items Not to Bring list campus-wide -- plan on a microfridge combo unit, which is rented in most first-year halls and comes included at no charge in every Bates House room.

⚠ Lofting policy is building-specific: USC's Lofting Kit Procedure permits DIY loft kits and risers in Bates House and South Tower and bans them outright in Patterson and Women's Quad -- where the university-issued beds still adjust between 25.5 and 60 inches. Where kits are allowed you must keep 30 inches between the top of the mattress and the lowest point of the ceiling including sprinkler heads and light fixtures, and any riser over 8 inches counts as a loft.

⚠ USC does not itemize air conditioning per building anywhere on its official housing pages. Its own mold-prevention page describes staff inspecting fan coil units inside student rooms, so rooms are mechanically conditioned, but confirm your assigned hall's current HVAC status with Residence Life before move-in.

What size mattress do USC dorm beds use?

Extra-long twin -- buy Twin XL sheets. USC's own room pages for Bates House, South Tower and Patterson list 'Bed Size: 80" (extra long twin)', which is a length only. The 38-inch figure often quoted alongside it is the bed frame width, not a published mattress width. The Women's Quad wing pages publish frame dimensions (38" deep x 85" wide) and an 80.5-inch clear width under the bed, but no mattress size line.

Are first-year students required to live on campus at USC?

Yes. USC's 2026 first-year housing FAQ states that the university requires all new first-year students to live on campus, and students with special circumstances may request an exemption by contacting the Housing office or through the housing portal.

Can I bring a mini fridge to my USC dorm?
