Winthrop University Freshman Dorms 2026

Winthrop University requires all first- and second-year students to live on campus for two years, with exemptions for married or non-traditional students and for students commuting from within 50 miles while living with a parent or guardian. Most new students are placed in Margaret Nance Hall, Winthrop's oldest residence hall (built 1895), where standard two-person rooms have upgraded semi-lofted bed furniture. Lee Wicker Hall is suite-style and built in 1962, though only its first floor plus rooms 202, 204, and 244 carry the newer semi-lofted furniture. Fall 2026 new/transfer student move-in is Friday, August 21.

What to bring to Winthrop Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Winthropfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

Winthrop's two-year live-on requirement applies to first- and second-year students; exemptions exist for married/non-traditional students and local (50mi or less) commuters living with a parent or guardian.

Phelps Hall is intentionally not included here -- Winthrop's own housing pages designate it an upper-class suite-style hall, not a first/second-year hall.

Thomson Hall's construction year is disputed between two Winthrop-controlled sources (1965 per a dated historical-archive photo vs 1962 on the live virtual-tour page); 1965 is used here as the better-sourced figure.
