Cary Quadrangle Dorm Checklist 2026

Purdue University

Large double, small double, single, or double suite; outer buildings = private connecting suite bath, South = community-style restrooms

Cary is Purdue's oldest hall, all-male. The four outer buildings (West, Northwest, Northeast, East) were fully renovated in 2007 and are air-conditioned double-suite style; the South section keeps its original non-air-conditioned, community-bathroom layout. Purdue's two official pages name the non-AC portion differently -- the Cary hall page says the South building, while the Housing FAQ says all units except Southeast and Southwest -- so confirm your exact building assignment. Long 89" mattresses run roughly 15-20 per hall. No single opening year is published for the complex.

  • Air conditioning depends on your specific Cary building. The Cary hall page says the South building has none while the four outer buildings do; Purdue's Housing FAQ instead lists AC in "all units except Southeast and Southwest." Confirm your building assignment before packing.
  • Lofts are listed as available in Cary Suites -- if you're assigned to a South community-bath room, don't assume a loft is on the table.

Living in Cary Quadrangle: what to know before you pack

The room

Room type varies more at Cary than almost anywhere else on campus: large doubles, small doubles, singles, and double suites (two rooms sharing one private connecting bathroom) are all in the mix depending on which of Cary's five buildings a student lands in. Every room gets a bed or lofted bed with standard mattress (77" x 36" x 7", with a long 89" x 36" x 7" option in limited supply for residents 6'4" and taller), a desk with chair, a dresser, a desk light, towel bars, a bookshelf, a bulletin board, curtains, and a waste basket. Kitchenettes in the common areas supplement the in-room setup, which matters since cooking appliances are heavily restricted in the bedrooms themselves.

Day to day

The four outer buildings were fully renovated in 2007 and pair two rooms to a private connecting bathroom -- effectively a suite -- while the South section, Cary's original layout, keeps community-style restrooms throughout each floor. Recreational lounges, community living rooms, two laundry rooms, kitchenettes, a music room, and a computer and print station are spread across the complex, and a central green space gives the all-male hall its own outdoor gathering spot.

Move-in day

New Cary residents mostly arrive during Boiler Gold Rush, August 15 through August 18, 2026, with a scheduled 30-minute timeslot; Boiler Gold Rush International students arrive August 14, and students outside orientation programming move in starting August 21. Because bathroom style, AC, and loft availability all differ by building, confirm your specific building assignment before packing -- South-section residents in particular should plan for a warm first week without in-room cooling.
