What to bring to Ball State Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Ball Statefreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ All first-year students must live on campus for two semesters under a Ball State Board of Trustees residency policy effective since fall 2005; exemptions require proof (living with parents within 60 miles, turning 21 before the first day of classes, 24+ accepted credit hours earned after high school, marriage recognized by Indiana, or primary custody of a minor child).

⚠ Ball State is a tobacco-free campus -- cigarettes, cigars, hookah, e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and any non-FDA-approved nicotine delivery device are banned in every building, parking structure, and outdoor area, including residence halls.

⚠ Charging or riding e-scooters, e-bikes, or hoverboards inside residence halls is prohibited over lithium-ion fire risk; these devices must be stored outdoors in designated bike parking or other University-approved locations unless Housing authorizes otherwise in writing.

⚠ Weapons of any kind -- including recreational pellet, airsoft, and dart guns, stun guns, tasers, and bows and arrows -- are prohibited in residence halls, staff may search a room if they believe a weapon is present, and violation may result in termination of the housing contract.

⚠ Ball State supplies loftable or stackable room furniture and states that buying or renting a loft from an external source is not permitted or necessary; when furniture is lofted, one window must remain completely clear with at least three feet of space, and staff can require a non-compliant loft to be removed.

⚠ Adhesive products are prohibited -- 3M/Command strips, adhesive-backed mirrors, and LED or smart light strips all carry a damage fee -- and Housing provides a free substitute mounting product at each hall's front desk.

Common questions about Ball State University dorms

What size mattress do Ball State dorm beds use?

Every hall provides a Twin XL bed and mattress on a height-adjustable frame -- each hall's official dimension PDF ends with the line "Note: Bed is adjustable." Maximum under-frame clearance varies by hall: 54 inches in DeHority, North West, and Schmidt/Wilson, but 30.5 inches in Noyer. Ball State supplies the loft and stacking hardware (and lends a rubber mallet at the front desk), and says buying or renting a loft from an outside vendor is not permitted or necessary -- so measure for under-bed storage bins, not for risers.

What should I bring for move-in?

Ball State's own packing list recommends Twin XL sheets and comforter, a mattress pad and pillows, towels, toiletries, a shower caddy and shower shoes, a lamp, storage containers, and a power strip or surge protector rated 15 amps only -- the fire-safety policy adds that it must be UL-approved with a built-in circuit breaker, since surge suppression alone doesn't meet the standard. Coordinate with your roommate on shared items like a mini fridge or microwave so you don't double up.

Can I bring a mini fridge or microwave?

Yes, and Ball State publishes exact limits: a mini fridge must be no more than 5 cubic feet and operate on no more than 1.6 amps, and a microwave must be 800 watts or less. Housing partners with MyMicroFridge for a rentable fridge-microwave combo delivered to the room before arrival. Air fryers, toasters, crock pots, InstaPots, coffee makers, waffle makers, and panini presses are "restricted" -- they may be kept in your room but used only in hall kitchenettes -- while toaster ovens, hot plates, candle warmers, and deep fryers are banned outright.

Are Ball State dorms air-conditioned?

Most are. Ball State states that Woodworth Complex is the only housing location on campus without centralized A/C; the other 10 residence halls are listed as air-conditioned on the official housing-rates page. Students who need A/C for a medical reason can request it as an accommodation through the Office of Disability Services. Do not bring a roll-away or freestanding air conditioner -- Ball State says those will not be allowed.

When is Fall 2026 move-in?

First-year move-in days are Sunday, August 16 and Monday, August 17, 2026. Students schedule a specific appointment window through the housing portal, which opened for scheduling on July 28. As of Ball State's current move-in page, all Sunday, August 16 appointments have been filled and students who haven't scheduled yet are directed to pick a Monday, August 17 slot. Returning students move in Thursday, August 20.
