What to bring to Purdue Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Purduefreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Residence hall entrance doors lock at 11 p.m. -- there's no curfew, but you must swipe in with your Purdue ID card or use a main entrance to get back in.

⚠ Most kitchen appliances (air fryers, toaster ovens, hot plates, rice cookers, crockpots, etc.) are banned outright in traditional hall rooms -- the permitted list is essentially coffee/tea makers with fully enclosed heating elements, portable microwaves of 1000 watts or less, and a UL-approved refrigerator/freezer of 4.0 cubic feet or smaller.

⚠ Extension cords and power strips without a CPSC-accredited testing lab seal are prohibited as fire hazards.

⚠ Arriving before your scheduled move-in window without pre-approval can trigger a $44 per day room-only fee.

⚠ Do not bring a personal wireless router -- Purdue's policy is that you will not broadcast a separate wireless signal in your residence hall.

⚠ Lofts are a Bedloft rental, and only Bedloft staff may install, adjust, or remove them -- do not plan on changing your own bed height, and note that Purdue does not publish an under-bed clearance measurement.

Common questions about Purdue University dorms

Is on-campus housing required for Purdue freshmen?

No. Purdue University Residences states that students are not required to live in campus housing, and a 2017 Purdue newsroom release likewise says "Purdue students are not required to live on campus." Even so, University Residences reports that as of 2019, 94% of incoming students chose to live on campus.

What size bed/mattress do Purdue dorms use?

Purdue's Facilities Guidelines list the standard mattress as 77-80 inches long and note that "Twin XL sheets will fit either size," so bring Twin XL sheets. The four halls profiled here each specify 77" long x 36" wide x 7" thick, with a long 89" x 36" x 7" mattress in limited supply (roughly 15-20 per hall) for residents 6'4" or taller, first-come first-served. Some locations and room types use Full XL instead -- check your specific hall's page. Note that Purdue's general Housing FAQ separately lists "36\" x 78\"", which does not match the hall pages.

Can I bring a fridge and microwave?

Yes, within limits. Purdue partners with the outside vendor Bedloft for microfridge units that meet its safety and capacity requirements. A standalone refrigerator/freezer must be UL approved and 4.0 cubic feet or smaller, and portable microwaves must be 1000 watts or less.

What are the dorm rules I should know before move-in?

No pets except fish, residence hall doors lock at 11 p.m. and require ID-card entry, you are not required to clean your room except before check-out at the end of the academic year, and you may not broadcast your own wireless signal. Most cooking appliances are banned in traditional hall rooms.

When do first-year students move in for fall 2026?

Boiler Gold Rush runs August 15 (from 1 p.m.) through August 18 (ending 2:40 p.m.), 2026, with each student assigned a 30-minute timeslot. Boiler Gold Rush International students move in earlier, on August 14 from 9 a.m. to 5:40 p.m. New students in the no-early-arrival group begin August 21. Arriving before your window without approval can incur a $44 per day room-only fee.
