Central Michigan University Freshman Dorms 2026

First- and second-year students at CMU are required to live on campus under a four-semester residency policy, in one of 17 residence halls across three communities (East, South, Towers). Students commuting within 60 miles from a parent/guardian's home, or enrolled entirely online, may request a Residency Exemption. Most halls use Twin-XL beds (36"W x 80"L) per CMU's own listings, but Carey Hall uses Full-XL (54"W x 80"L). Air conditioning is published as an amenity only on CMU's newer suite halls — Kulhavi and Celani both state all suites are climate-controlled — while CMU does not publish an AC status either way for the remaining halls; personal air conditioners are prohibited campus-wide except by Student Disability Services approval. Fall 2026 first-year and transfer move-in is centralized on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026.

Pick your residence hall

Every Central Michigan University residence hall below has verified bed dimensions, AC status, and a checklist sized to that exact room.

What to bring to Central Michigan Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every CMUfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

Tobacco use or possession of any kind is banned everywhere on campus, including residence halls — cigarettes, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, pipes, cigars, hookahs, vape pens, snus and snuff.

An unauthorized pet draws an immediate $50 fine plus 48 hours to remove the animal; after that window, a further $25 is assessed for every day it remains.

Improper checkout at move-out carries a $50 improper checkout fee on top of any damage or cleaning charges.

Personal or homemade lofts are prohibited in every hall. BedLoft.com is the only permitted rental source, and BedLoft rentals themselves are not allowed in Carey (due to bed size) or in Campbell, Celani, Fabiano, Kesseler and Kulhavi — in those five because the university's own beds already loft, so no rental is needed.

Personal air conditioners and evaporative coolers are prohibited campus-wide unless approved through Student Disability Services. CMU lists air conditioning as an amenity only on its newer suite halls, so confirm cooling for a specific hall with Residence Life before packing.

Common questions about Central Michigan University dorms

What size are the beds in CMU dorms?
Most CMU residence halls list a Twin-XL bed at 36"W x 80"L — that is CMU's own published measurement for Kulhavi, Sweeney, Thorpe, Emmons, Merrill, Woldt and Celani. Carey Hall is the exception: it uses a Full-XL bed (54"W x 80"L) with height adjustment up to 32" of under-bed storage. In most halls beds can be bunked, raised up to 32", or lofted; in the newer suite halls (Campbell, Celani, Fabiano, Kesseler, Kulhavi) the university bed lofts to a full 64" of under-bed storage on its own. Personal or homemade lofts are never allowed anywhere.
Can I bring a fridge and microwave?
A refrigerator is allowed in every hall as long as it does not exceed 4.3 cubic feet. In-room microwaves are only permitted in Campbell, Celani, Fabiano, Kesseler, and Kulhavi halls — CMU cites safety and energy-use limits elsewhere. In every other hall, microwave use is limited to the floor kitchenette, or students can rent a combination microwave/refrigerator unit through BedLoft.
Is on-campus housing required for freshmen?
Yes. CMU's campus residency policy requires first- and second-year students to live on campus, a four-semester requirement. Students who live within 60 miles and will commute from a parent/guardian's home, or who are enrolled entirely online (not Hy-Flex or hybrid), may complete a Residency Exemption. Transfer students have the option to live on campus but are not required to.
Are CMU dorms air-conditioned?
It varies by hall, and CMU only publishes it for some. Kulhavi Hall (Towers) and Celani Hall (East) both state that all suites are climate-controlled, and Kulhavi carries an explicit air conditioning amenity listing. CMU does not publish an air conditioning status either way for the other halls — including Carey, Cobb, Campbell, Kesseler, Troutman and Wheeler in Towers, all of South Community (Beddow, Merrill, Sweeney, Thorpe), and Emmons, Fabiano, Herrig, Saxe and Woldt in East. Note that cooling does not track the community: Kulhavi in Towers publishes it while Carey in Towers does not, and Celani in East does. Personal air conditioners are prohibited campus-wide unless approved by Student Disability Services, so confirm your specific hall with Residence Life rather than assuming.
When is Fall 2026 move-in for first-year students?
CMU's centralized first-year and transfer student move-in is Thursday, August 27, 2026. Earlier program move-ins run before it — IMPACT on Saturday, August 22 and Leadership Safari on Monday, August 24. Transfer, returning and University Apartments students move in Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30, and fall classes begin August 31.
