Living in Emmons Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Emmons Hall houses four residents in a suite made of two bedrooms sharing one bathroom, plus a common area. Bedrooms include a 6-drawer dresser, a desk and chair per resident, and generous closet space at 6 feet wide by 2 feet 6 inches deep, with shower and window curtains already hung. Twin-XL beds (36"W x 80"L) can be bunked, raised for up to 32 inches of under-bed storage, or lofted using the university's own frame — no rental required, though a BedLoft.com rental is permitted here if you want one. Personal or homemade lofts are banned campus-wide. Microwaves stay out of the room in Emmons; residents use the kitchenette on each floor, which CMU calls out specifically as part of the hall's layout.

Day to day

Emmons sits in East Community with Celani, Fabiano, Herrig, Saxe, and Woldt halls. Emmons itself is the base for the Health Professions Residential College, giving students in nursing, pre-med, and related tracks a built-in study and social network. Residents have a fitness center steps from the hall, the East Success Center staffed by a Care Advocate and Assistant Director of Residence Life, Dine & Connect all-you-care-to-eat dining open daily, and The Market at Woldt for grab-and-go food plus Pizza King and FujiSan Sushi. Notably, East Community halls stay open during Thanksgiving, semester, and spring breaks — a real difference from South and Towers halls, which close.

Move-in day

Emmons first-year residents check in on CMU's centralized Fall 2026 move-in day, Thursday, August 27. CMU doesn't publish an air conditioning status for Emmons in either direction, so confirm with Residence Life and pack a fan as a hedge for move-in week — personal AC units require Student Disability Services approval. Because East Community halls stay open over breaks (unlike South and Towers), students who need to stay on campus during Thanksgiving or spring break have that option here without special arrangements.
