What to bring to Michigan State Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Michigan Statefreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ Only Van Hoosen Hall, University Village Apartments, and 1855 Place are air-conditioned -- every traditional residence hall, including all common first-year halls, has no AC, and personal air conditioners of any kind are banned unless approved as a medical accommodation (a $150 installation and maintenance charge applies if approved, and 2026-27 requests had to be completed by August 1 for fall move-in).

⚠ Incoming first-year students must live in on-campus housing for their first four semesters enrolled (summer term excluded) as a condition of enrollment; per MSU's University Housing Policy, failure to adhere to the requirement may result in termination of your enrollment, and obtaining a release from the housing contract does not lift the requirement.

⚠ Refrigerators are capped at 5 cubic feet and microwaves at 750 watts -- oversized or combo units beyond those limits are not allowed.

⚠ Move-in is a self-selected, first-come-first-served 30-minute time slot chosen in My Housing -- not an assigned window. Bring only one vehicle to the designated unloading zone, the driver must stay with the vehicle and move it to long-term neighborhood parking as soon as it is unloaded, and U-Hauls, trailers, and campers are prohibited. MSU provides move-in carts at the halls.

What size bed is in an MSU residence hall room?

Every MSU residence hall room comes with a loftable bed frame and a Twin XL mattress, so pack Twin XL sheets and a mattress pad to fit. MSU does not publish exact mattress dimensions in inches or any loft-height/clearance measurements -- confirm those with Residence Life if you need precise numbers.

Do MSU residence halls have air conditioning?

No, with the exception of Van Hoosen Hall, University Village Apartments, and 1855 Place, MSU residence halls are not air-conditioned. Yes. Incoming first-year students must live in on-campus housing for the first four semesters they are enrolled (summer term excluded), with limited exceptions such as being married or in an established partnership, being at least 20 by December 31 of the academic year, being a veteran with a year or more of active service, living with a family member, taking six or fewer credits, or having earned 30 credits by the close of the first semester at MSU. For 2026-27, transfer students are exempt.

When do first-year students move into MSU residence halls in 2026?

Incoming students move in between Tuesday, August 25 and Wednesday, August 26, 2026, with New Student Orientation programming beginning the evening of Wednesday, August 26. Incoming international students move in earlier, Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23, with their orientation beginning August 24. Returning students move in August 26-27. You select your own move-in time slot in My Housing over the summer -- slots are first come, first served.
