Wayne State University Freshman Dorms 2026

Wayne State does not require first-year students to live on campus, but those who do are placed through the FYRE (First-Year Residential Experience) program in one of three halls — Ghafari Hall, Chatsworth Suites, or The Thompson. Atchison Hall, an Honors College hall open to all class years, is not itself a FYRE hall but shares the same move-in day. Ghafari and Chatsworth pair extra-long twin beds with private baths and confirmed air conditioning; The Thompson is a small, historic Fine/Performing Arts-focused hall with community bathrooms, no published bed specs, and genuinely unconfirmed air conditioning. Beds are fixed-frame campus-wide — lofting or modifying them yourself is against policy. Fall 2026 move-in for first-year and Atchison Hall students is Wednesday, August 26, at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

What to bring to Wayne State Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every Wayne Statefreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

Smoke-detector reconnection fee is $250 per occurrence at Ghafari, Chatsworth, The Thompson, Atchison Hall, University Tower, and Anthony Wayne Drive Apartments, and $200 per occurrence at Towers Residential Suites, if a detector is found removed or disabled.

Lock changes for lost keys cost $250-$500, and a damaged/broken key replacement is $4 — residents are also responsible for roommates' replacement key costs.

Lockout fee is $20 per lockout after the first (first lockout is free).

Unauthorized pets carry a minimum $100 fine, assessed daily until the pet is removed.

Smoking-related damage triggers a smoke-remediation cleanup charge ranging from $500 to $3,000.

Lofting or personally modifying a bed frame is against policy campus-wide — beds are fixed-frame in all halls.

Common questions about Wayne State University dorms

Is freshman housing required at Wayne State?
No. WSU's housing site states plainly that "living on campus is not required," though the university encourages it.
Where and when is Fall 2026 move-in for first-year students?
Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the Wayne State Fieldhouse (1290 W. Warren Ave, Detroit). Atchison Hall residents move in the same day; upperclass, transfer, and graduate students move in Thursday, August 27.
Is Atchison Hall a first-year hall?
Not officially. WSU's own FYRE (First-Year Residential Experience) page names only Ghafari Hall, Chatsworth Suites, and The Thompson as first-year halls. Atchison is an Honors College hall open to students of any class year, though it shares the same move-in day and fee structure as the FYRE halls.
Can I loft my bed at Wayne State?
No. "Lofts and personally constructed bed modifications" are explicitly prohibited campus-wide — all beds are fixed-frame.
