What to bring to Grand Valley State Universitydorms — and what’s already there

Every GVSUfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ First-year students without an approved housing exemption face a non-compliance fee for each semester out of compliance, equivalent to the cost of traditional-style housing plus a base meal plan.

⚠ Air conditioners not owned and installed by the University are banned campus-wide; GVSU states there is no air conditioning in any traditional-style, suite-style, or 1-2 bedroom apartment-style housing on North Campus.

⚠ Beds in North Campus freshman living centers arrive lofted on move-in day (cluster-style rooms arrive half-lofted) -- measure before buying risers or under-bed storage.

⚠ Extension cords are prohibited everywhere on campus -- only UL-certified power strips with built-in circuit breakers are allowed, one per resident.

Common questions about Grand Valley State University dorms

Are freshmen required to live on campus at GVSU?

Yes. Beginning in Fall 2021, GVSU has required all first-year students to live on campus unless they qualify for an exemption (two or more years out of high school, married, primary or joint custody of a child, commuting from a parent or guardian's residence, or veteran status); students out of compliance are charged a non-compliance fee each semester equal to traditional-style housing plus a base meal plan.

What size bed is in a GVSU dorm room?

All on-campus beds are twin XL -- the mattress measures 36 x 80 inches -- so extra-long twin sheets are what you want. GVSU provides all bed frames and mattresses, and beds arrive lofted on move-in day in North Campus freshman living centers (half-lofted in cluster-style rooms). Beds can be re-configured by lofting, bunking, or trundling without tools, but no new loft construction is permitted.

Can I bring a mini-fridge or microwave?

Yes -- one refrigerator of 4.6 cubic feet or less is allowed per unit in cluster, traditional, and suite-style housing, and one microwave not exceeding 1,000 watts.

Do GVSU first-year dorms have air conditioning?

Mostly no. GVSU's Housing FAQ states there is no air conditioning in any suite-style, traditional-style, or 1-2 bedroom apartment-style housing on North Campus. The buildings GVSU names as air conditioned are South Apartments, Laker Village, Niemeyer, Murray, Van Steeland, Holton Hooker, Winter Hall, and Secchia Hall -- so among first-year North Campus options, Holton-Hooker's cluster rooms are the exception.

When is fall 2026 move-in for first-year students?

Move-in is staggered by building across three days -- Wednesday, August 26 through Friday, August 28, 2026 -- with an alternate-arrival request option for students who need a different date. Some buildings, including HHLC and Kistler, are flagged as "scheduled," meaning an assigned arrival window rather than open all-day check-in.
