Living in Kistler: what to know before you pack
The room
Kistler rooms come as traditional doubles, quads, or singles, each furnished with a twin XL bed frame and mattress per resident, a wardrobe, a desk with organizer, a 3-drawer dresser, a bookshelf, and a chair. Flooring is luxury vinyl tile, and the hall page lists utilities as heat, electricity, internet, cable, and water -- air conditioning is not among them, and GVSU's Housing FAQ states outright that there is no air conditioning in traditional-style housing on North Campus. Beds in GVSU's North Campus freshman living centers come lofted on move-in day and can be re-configured by lofting, bunking, or trundling without tools, but GVSU prohibits any new loft construction for safety, and all furniture must be returned to its original form factor before year-end check-out. Residents share community-style bathrooms with private shower rooms containing a toilet, shower, and sink, rather than an en-suite bathroom.
Day to day
Kistler sits on GVSU's North Campus, the traditional hub for first-year students, within walking distance of North Campus dining and classroom buildings. The building offers a laundry room, a lounge and study room, a community kitchen, and recreation amenities like ping pong and foosball tables, all behind 24/7 secure card access. As an all-traditional-style hall, Kistler places residents close together on shared floors, which GVSU markets as a strong first-year community environment, though the tradeoff is less privacy than suite- or cluster-style options.
Move-in day
Kistler is scheduled for Thursday, August 27, 2026 move-in as part of GVSU's staggered North Neighborhood schedule, which also covers Maple, Oak, Pine, Johnson, Ott, Pickard, Kirkpatrick, North C, and Swanson that same day. Kistler is one of the buildings GVSU flags as "scheduled," meaning families arrive in an assigned check-in window rather than any time that day; students needing a different date can request an alternate arrival slot through the housing portal, and late arrivals on Saturday or Sunday can check in during extended 8 a.m.-8 p.m. hours at the residential desk.
