Living in Piñon Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Every room in Piñon Hall is a double, paired with the room next door to share a suite bathroom with double sinks and private toilet/shower areas -- no walking down a public hallway to shower. Each resident gets a Twin XL bed frame and mattress (35 x 80 inches) that lofts and adjusts, plus a desk and chair, a shelving unit, a console, and a mix of small and large dressers to split with a roommate. Individual Ethernet drops and shared basic cable come standard, though residents still need to bring their own bedding sized for the Twin XL mattress, a mini fridge (6 cubic feet max), and a microwave. Piñon is ADA compliant with elevator access, so accessible rooms are genuinely available, not just on paper.

Day to day

Piñon sits on North Campus near Corbett Center Student Union, so it's a short walk to dining, the bookstore, and most academic buildings. The hall wraps around two large grassy courtyards used for outdoor studying and pickup volleyball, plus an indoor billiards room and floor lounges with ping-pong and pool tables, two community kitchens, and laundry on each floor. Piñon houses Living Learning Communities for Business, Professional Golf Management, and Sports in Society, and it's also home to NMSU athletes in baseball, golf, softball, tennis, and track & field, so residents are living alongside a mix of major-focused peers and student-athletes. The Garcia Hall service desk and North Campus mail distribution center next door handle package pickup and maintenance requests for Piñon residents.

Move-in day

NMSU's fall 2026 move-in weekend ran August 15-16, with timeslots assigned through the MyHousing portal and sent to students' NMSU email by August 3. Piñon's elevator and ADA-compliant layout make it one of the easier halls for hauling bins and furniture up from the curb, and its suite bathrooms mean roommates only have to coordinate move-in logistics with the two adjoining rooms, not a whole floor. Because mailboxes, the service desk, and the North Campus mail distribution center are all based in Garcia Hall next door, new residents pick up mail and ask move-in questions there rather than in Piñon itself. Families should still confirm exact timeslot and check-in location on the MyHousing portal before arrival, since procedures can shift year to year.
