Living in Garcia Hall: what to know before you pack
The room
Garcia Hall's standard room is a double split between Garcia East and Garcia West, mirror-image wings that share the same suite layout: two adjoining rooms share a bathroom. Each resident gets a Twin XL bed frame and mattress (35 x 80 inches) that lofts and adjusts, a desk and chair with built-in storage and a whiteboard, a shelving unit, a console, a dresser, and a sink with counter and cabinet space just outside the bathroom. As with the rest of NMSU's first-year halls, residents supply their own Twin XL bedding, a mini fridge (6 cubic feet max), and a microwave. Garcia is NMSU's largest first-year community, housing roughly 800 students across its East and West sections combined, with each section holding about 400.
Day to day
Garcia is the social and logistical hub of NMSU's North Campus first-year halls: the Garcia Hall service desk and North Campus mail distribution center handle mail and packages for the North Campus residence halls, and the 10,000-square-foot La Vista Learning Center located in Garcia Hall offers two classrooms, study areas, computer labs, and faculty/academic advising space. Garcia West hosts Living Learning Communities in Education, Nursing, Science and Health, Social Sciences, Agricultural/Consumer & Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Technology, and CAMP, while Garcia East hosts Fine Arts, Criminal Justice, Engineering, Sankofa Black Culture, and Honors. Garcia also houses NMSU athletes across ten sports -- baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, and track & field -- so residents are mixed in with a wide range of academic and athletic communities.
Move-in day
NMSU's fall 2026 move-in weekend ran August 15-16, with move-in timeslots assigned through MyHousing and emailed to students by August 3. Because Garcia is NMSU's largest first-year hall at roughly 800 residents, expect more traffic in the lobby and parking areas during move-in than at the smaller halls -- unpacking vehicles promptly is especially important here to keep check-in lanes clear. Garcia is also where residents of the other North Campus halls pick up mail, since the shared service desk and North Campus mail distribution center are based there, so lines can include more than just Garcia's own residents. Confirm the exact timeslot and check-in location on MyHousing before arrival.
