Living in Newsom Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

Newsom Hall's rooms are community-style doubles, the same setup as most of CSU's traditional halls: two residents share a room with twin XL beds (39" wide by 80" long), a study desk and chair each, a wardrobe or closet, a dresser, and trash and recycling bins, with centralized bathrooms on each corridor shared by the floor. Beds use the Red/Brown Short loft frame and start at the standard 20" low height, adjustable up to medium or high. CSU's rates table lists Newsom as 100% open for general assignments, while the hall's own page tags up to 50% of its space as designated for Residential Learning Communities -- the two official pages disagree, so incoming first-years should confirm with Residence Life if an RLC placement matters to them.

Day to day

Newsom sits on the south side of campus, conveniently located between Ram's Horn and Braiden Dining Centers and near the on-campus stadium, intramural fields, and the Student Rec Center, and it's home to 400 students. It offers the standard hall amenities -- laundry facilities, lounge/rec space, study and meeting spaces, a student community kitchen, a large event space, and Wi-Fi -- but is not marked as air-conditioned in CSU's rates table, which flags only Academic Village, Laurel Village, and Summit, so packing a fan is worth it for late-August warmth. Space heaters, window units, and swamp coolers are prohibited in every CSU hall, including Newsom. On- and off-site parking is limited, with discounted parking available at nearby Ingersoll Hall.

Move-in day

Newsom residents move in during CSU's Fall 2026 residence-hall window, Tuesday, August 18 through Wednesday, August 19, with an individual arrival slot registered via the CSU Housing Portal in advance. Cars use a Move In lot near the hall to pick up room keys and check in -- bring photo ID, and grab a RamCard on move-in day if you need one -- then shift to an unloading zone where the vehicle has to be moved within 30 minutes of parking, with towing enforced. Volunteers are on site to help carry boxes in during reservation hours both days. Laurel St., Whitcomb St., Lake St., and Centre Ave. are closed to parking outside the posted move-in areas.
