What to bring to University of Nebraska-Lincolndorms — and what’s already there

Every Nebraskafreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.

⚠ First-year students enrolled in 6+ credit hours must satisfy the on-campus residency requirement (housing contract, approved exemption, or the other accepted item) by August 1 -- UNL charges students who miss the deadline for an unassigned traditional double bedroom.

⚠ Only non-dangerous fish that live completely underwater are allowed as pets, in an aquarium no larger than 25 gallons -- no cats, dogs, gerbils, snakes, birds, crabs, turtles, frogs, or spiders.

⚠ Small appliances must be 800 watts or less and UL approved, with no open heating element or flame -- which rules out most full-size personal microwaves and every hot plate or grill.

⚠ Candles and incense are prohibited for use anywhere in University Housing; the only permitted substitute is a candle warmer or potpourri burner with an enclosed heating element and automatic shut-off.

⚠ Beds are loftable to three settings, but students may not bring their own loft or modify the bed beyond what it is designed to accommodate; UNL's policy states that by lofting your bed you assume some risk of injury.

Common questions about University of Nebraska-Lincoln dorms

What size bed is in a Nebraska residence hall room?

Every hall has an extra-long twin bed on a loftable/adjustable frame. UNL's amenities page states that beds in all residence halls are 36" x 80" (Kauffman is 36" x 75"), while the same page's room-measurement chart lists the XL twin mattress as 38" x 80" and notes all figures are approximate and rounded down -- buy standard Twin XL bedding and it will fit either way. Housing provides and assembles the bed; students may not bring their own loft or modify the frame beyond its design.

Are UNL residence halls air conditioned?

Yes. UNL's amenities chart states that hall complexes include air conditioning, and every traditional hall page lists in-room temperature control among the room features.

Can I bring a mini fridge or microwave?

A refrigerator/freezer combo (4.3-4.8 cu ft) is already installed in every traditional-hall room, so don't duplicate it. Traditional halls do not include a microwave -- suite- and apartment-style units do, and there are designated public-area kitchens in the residence halls. UNL does not publish an explicit yes-or-no on personal microwaves in traditional rooms; the Small Appliance Policy caps anything you bring at 800 watts and UL approved, which most microwaves exceed, so confirm with housing@unl.edu before buying one.

Are Nebraska freshmen required to live on campus?

Yes. All incoming first-year students enrolled for six or more credit hours are required to reside in approved on-campus housing unless they qualify for an exemption (turning 19 before the contract period, commuting from a parent or guardian's home within 30 miles, 27+ transferred credit hours after high school, married or in a civil union, having children, or two or more prior semesters in university-approved housing). The fall deadline is August 1.

When does fall 2026 move-in happen?

Move-In 2026 runs August 16-19, but the days are assigned by hall. August 16 curbside is reserved for approved groups (sorority recruitment, First Husker POWER, Link Up to Lincoln, the Kiewit Engineering Academy). Harper, Schramm, Smith, and Courtyards move in Monday, August 17; Abel, Sandoz, Kauffman, Selleck, and Village on Tuesday, August 18; the suites and Massengale on Wednesday, August 19. Exact appointment times are emailed to Huskers accounts on July 22, 2026. Self-serve move-in is available after 6 p.m. on August 16-19 and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. from August 20 onward.
