Laramie, WY · Wyoming's Flagship University
University of Wyoming Freshman Dorms 2026
The University of Wyoming is the state's only four-year university, and UW Regulation 11-8 requires every incoming new student admitted into an in-person Laramie Campus program and enrolled in at least 6 credit hours to live in the residence halls for their first academic year and to carry a residential dining plan. Exemptions exist for students who are 21 or older, married, single parents, living within 60 miles with a parent or guardian, enrolled online, or transferring in 24 or more post-high-school credits. Freshmen are assigned to the new North Hall or South Hall (in-room air conditioning, built-in Microfridge) or to McIntyre Hall (no air conditioning, bring your own fridge). Every hall uses an extra-long twin mattress, 80" L x 39" W x 8" D, on a frame that lofts to 54 inches off the floor. Saddle Up is a required first-year program, so first-year move-in is August 21-22, 2026.

What to bring to University of Wyomingdorms — and what’s already there
Every Wyomingfreshman hall includes the same base furnishings. Skip anything already in your room, pack what’s missing, and leave the banned items at home.
⚠ North and South Hall rooms include a 3.1-cubic-foot Microfridge, so personal refrigerators and microwaves are banned there and the provided unit may not be removed from the room.
⚠ McIntyre, Orr and Tobin House residents may bring a mini fridge only at 3.5 cubic feet or smaller and under 900 watts, plus a microwave under 900 watts.
⚠ UW Police store only firearms, compact bows and crossbows -- three weapons plus a bow, with no cases or ammunition -- and explicitly cannot store knives or pepper spray, so any blade over three inches has to stay home.
⚠ August 14, 2026 is the last day to apply for a housing exemption or cancellation; after that date you must be released in writing through the Contract Release process.
⚠ McIntyre and Orr Hall are not air-conditioned and window air conditioning units are prohibited campus-wide, so a fan is the only cooling option there.

Common questions about University of Wyoming dorms
- What size bed is in UW dorm rooms?
- All three first-year halls use an extra-long twin mattress (80" L x 39" W x 8" D). North and South Hall frames are loft-style with a top setting 54 inches from the floor to the bottom of the mattress; McIntyre's frames can also sit at single height or be bunked.
- Can I bring my own mini fridge and microwave?
- Only in McIntyre, Orr and Tobin House, and only if the fridge is 3.5 cubic feet or smaller and under 900 watts, with a microwave under 900 watts. North and South Hall rooms already include a Microfridge, so personal units are banned there and the provided unit cannot be removed.
- Are UW residence halls air conditioned?
- North Hall and South Hall have in-room air conditioning and heating units that shut off automatically when a window is opened. UW's housing FAQ states plainly that McIntyre and Orr Hall are not air-conditioned, and window units are prohibited, so bring a fan.
- Is on-campus housing required for freshmen?
- Yes. UW Regulation 11-8 requires incoming new students in in-person Laramie Campus programs taking at least 6 credit hours to live in the halls for their first academic year and to buy a residential dining plan. Exemptions include being 21 or older, married, a single parent, living within 60 miles with a parent or guardian, enrolling in an online degree, or arriving with 24 or more post-high-school credit hours.
- When do first-year students move in for Fall 2026?
- August 21-22, 2026. Saddle Up is a required first-year program, so essentially all freshmen move in that weekend, ahead of Saddle Up week August 24-28. August 29 is returning-student move-in and the day the housing contract officially begins.
