Living in South Hall: what to know before you pack

The room

South Hall shares North Hall's exact room design: an extra-long twin mattress (80" L x 39" W x 8" D) on a variable-height loft-style frame that tops out 54 inches from the floor to the bottom of the mattress, a desk and chair, a three-drawer dresser, a nightstand, two closets, and a vanity with sink, mirror and under-counter storage. A built-in 3.1-cubic-foot Microfridge with a three-port charging station comes standard and cannot be removed, so personal fridges and microwaves are not permitted. Room types are community-style doubles and singles along with semi-suites offering a shared or private bath. UW describes the new halls as having air conditioning and heating in each room, with the unit shutting off automatically when the window is opened.

Day to day

South Hall is the larger of UW's two new first-year halls at 542 beds to North Hall's 410, part of the same $285.5 million project that also added the two-story Dining Center. It came online for the spring 2026 semester, a few months after North Hall opened in August 2025, and is built around the same freshman interest group and living-learning community model, so first-year students often live near classmates with shared academic interests. The building has secured entry, individual-use bathrooms in each pod, community lounges, study rooms, ski lockers, first-floor laundry and a first-floor community kitchen.

Move-in day

First-year move-in is Friday August 21 and Saturday August 22, 2026, before Saddle Up week runs August 24-28; because Saddle Up is a required first-year program, that weekend is when nearly all freshmen arrive. August 29 is returning-student move-in and the official start of the housing contract. Arrival times are staggered -- Friday 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. -- and South Hall check-in is staged through the War Memorial Stadium parking lot off 22nd Street. Expect heavy traffic and temporary closures on Willett Drive, 15th Street and 19th Street as UW welcomes roughly 1,200 students and families.
